How do I update the Freeview DAT file?

Post by Nuuk »

I am trying to retune but the channel numbers being used for the search are wrong (despite me choosing my local transmitter). I get a message after the search telling me the the Freeview DAT file is out of date.

So how do I update it please?

Run TopManager on the pc (one of old your posts said you were going to "install it next")
and Use The Tools| Install File option multiple times for Freeview.dat, FxTxData.tsv and the Logos (say Yes to Overwrite)

Thanks Geoff. I converted my old laptop to Linux Mint so I will have to work out how to get TopManager working on that.

Assuming you can connect to the toppy, you can copy the files to the \ProgramFiles\Settings folder (the logos will need to come from gramps site and put in the correct location).

If you still have a windows system, why don't you install TopManager on that?

Yes, it may be easier to bring the Toppy to my PC.

No it isn't! I have the Toppy connected to the PC via a USB cable but it doesn't show up in WIndows Exporer, and when I try to connect, I get the message:

Connecting to Toppy...
No Toppy connections detected - will try each dll in turn
Attempting to open USB connection using XP.dll ...
Attempting to open USB connection using Vista.dll ...
Attempting to open USB connection using tfWinUSB.dll ...
Failed to establish connection to Toppy using any of the USB drivers
<<< Connection failed
TopManager has not detected any programs that would prevent use e.g. Altair
<<< Check Toppy is switched on and cable is connected

I have tried restarting the Toppy, removing and reconnecting the USB cable, but to no avail. I'm using W10 if that makes a difference. And I have tried two different USB leads.

I have also dug out an old XP PC but I get exactly the same issue with that, ie the Toppy is not detected.

For Win 10, you may have to install a different driver called z4t. Have a look at:

Regrettably now toppyless. 2/4/2018

Yo will need to run z4t on a win10 pc (but you also have to jump through hoops to allow "unsigned" drivers to be used)

As you have the old XP system out, I suggest you run z4t on that and only power up the toppy AFTER you have started the program (no jumping through security issues). You should then be able to run TopManager.
Make a note of which USB port you use on the XP system; you will need to use this same port if you need to connect again in the future (this wouldn't apply to the Win10 system)

Longer term, you either need to get win10 talking to the toppy or keep the old XP system.

OK, after a few tries, I have installed the z4t driver, the Toppy is recognised, and I have used Topmanager to copy the Fereview.dat file to it. But the version that I have downloaded and copied is the same one that was already on there, so I am still getting the message that Freeview.dat is out of date.

So again, when I go to retune, I am getting the wrong channel numbers for where I live.

I did a Google but cannot find a another Freeview.date file. Where do I go from here please?

There were a number of channel number changes in my region on the 10th, so it's bound to be out of date.
