accent letters

Post by Frank Haemorrhage »

There's a new BBC channel here in Scotland, which means I'll have to reorganise my favourites list. My first thought was just to swap out BBC ALBA, because accented letters don't display properly and Gaelic is full of accented characters.

But it occurs to me that MyStuff probably ought to handle accents, it says so in the v6.5 change log. So, somewhat belatedly, I'm wondering what I need to do to get this to work for me.

I'm using MyStuff 6.6 with the default fonts. For example, An Là displays as An La. How do I get rid of all those extra letters scattered through the text?

I raised this with BobD ages ago. He was intending to sort it out, but later felt that the EPG data gathering software ought to handle it.

Since MyStuff is no longer in development, the only hope is that EPG2MEI (or whatever the relevant TAP is) can be modified to do it.

I guess you are out of luck!

R2D2 wrote EPG2MEI but no longer has a toppy or the development environment to build it (I think EMJB unsuccessfully asked him for the source)

I have thought of creating my own version to overcome some short comings e.g. MS doesn't always know about current programmes (as shown in the native EPG) because EPG2MEI has not passed the data to it (this typically happens for sports event when a programme finishes early or, worse still, BBC suddenly decide to move it to another channel)

However, I have more interesting things to do than try and mimic what EPG2MEI does. The user base is also diminishing so the reward/effort ratio does not make this worthwhile.

I thought that I could remember a thread about accented letters. I can't find it now using Google, so maybe I mis-remember. But Bobd's website and Chunkywizard's manual mention "Correct display of accented characters" and "Accents in Programme names and descriptions are correctly displayed", which at least reassures me that I wasn't completely imagining it. So, for five(!) years I've mistakenly thought that other MyStuff users were enjoying acute, grave, circumflex and maybe even umlaut?
