Locked in reboot cycle

Post by MacC »

Hi

I have now received and installed working converter and 80 wire cable. I can now see the format option.

However

I have now purchased a refurbished SATA drive 320 GB from cpc farnell for £7.37.

I believe this is a more suitable size for me as my original drive was 160GB so I have doubled that. (2 TB was maybe too big.)

I have formatted this in the toppy with the new converter and cable. No problems it formatted in seconds as supposed to.

I have transferred all my recordings again using topfHDRW.

My question now is do I have to reinstate the original drive to the toppy to make another fresh snapshot with TM or will the original snapshot still be available on my laptop even after the laptop has been disconnected and shutdown for a few weeks now.

A 500GB or 1TB would probably have been a better choice for a replacement disk but, as you are starting from scratch and experience of a 160GB disk you should be fine.

Are you trying to restore recordings from the old disk or just trying to get the Mystuff
data files?

If just the Mystuff settings then your existing snapshot may suffice - assuming you haven't set up more searches or changed any other Mystuff options.

Assuming the new disk is empty, I suggest you use GCBMyStuffInstaller to install Mystuff (choose option 1 - MyStuff and firmware).

If you then want to recover the MyStuff files, use TopManager Snapshot| Recover
and click through the folders so that you only recover things in ProgramFiles\Settings\ MyStuff

If you want any recordings from your old disk then that is a different matter.

Locked in reboot cycle

Post by MacC »

Hi

In this thread I have had a few different issues to deal with as the one fault has led to another so just to summarise.

Initial problem constant rebooting, I couldn't resolve this.

So I had tried to install new 2TB disk.

When I formatted disc in toppy it didn't complete fully.

I made a snapshot with TM, I transferred all my recordings using topfHDRW, I couldn't then connect with TM to reinstate snapshot.

When I checked certain native toppy options were not available. Format disk etc

It turns out this was all because the converter board and or cable were incompatible.

I have now installed new converter and formatted the new 320GB disc with no problem and transferred all my recordings again no problem.

So I now need to either reinstall the original snapshot I made (if it's still going to be available on my PC after 3 weeks) or do I have make another snapshot before trying to install MyStuff with GCBMystuffinstaller.

The snapshot should still be on your pc

Your post says that you have already copied the recordings to the mew disk so just use the TM Snapshot | Recover (manage) option to recover the files in \ProgramFiles\Settings\MyStuff

Then perform a fresh install using GCBMyStuffInstaller.
Note: Alternatively, you could recover all the file in the snapshot and then use GCBMyStuffInstaller to make sure everything is current.

Yes, just check MyStuff (the installer will load the other files)

Alternatively, restore everything and then use the installer (it will replace any existing files). The advantage of doing this is that you keep anything unusual e.g special taps and/or other files. The disadvantage is that you keep any rubbish that may have been recreated. The first way is the "clean" way; if necessary, you can always recover any other files you need from the snapshot at a later date

Locked in reboot cycle

Post by MacC »

Hi

I think I may have messed up slightly.

I restored MyStuff folder from snapshot.

However I didn't rename AutoStart to xAtuoStart before using MyStuffInstaller option 1, consequently I am back to square one of my original post the toppy is in constant reboot cycle.

(So maybe something in the MyStuff snapshot is the root cause)

I have tried again by renaming AutoStart, to xAutoStart however I then get the same result as I had earlier in this post, whereby the MySuffInstaller fails at line 181. I have posted the install log previously but I can post the latest if that helps. I suspect they're the same.

Maybe I have to try installing everything from scratch, however I'm not sure if all the TAP links on toppy website are still current and active !

I suggested only recovering the MyStuff folder before reinstalling because it meant any rubbish would be left on the pc.

I've no idea why the installer is failing; based on your previous log, it should have already successfully copied files to the toppy i.e. it can write to the disk.
Please post the latest install log.

I can access EPG but it is empty
I can change channels with P+ P-
I can make a recording but only on current channel. ( When I check it in archive it is labelled correctly, even though this isn't visible in the EPG view !! )

Just wondering if it is objecting to the 0 length file (though it has worked for others).

Look in the Source folder where you downloaded the installer and edit MyStuff_FreshInstall.dat to contain some text e.g. 'test'
Then rerun the installer.

If that doesn't work, edit the script file (InstallScript101.txt) and comment out the line about "MyStuff_FreshInstall.dat" by adding "##" to the start of the line

Please post log of 2nd if neither works

Hi Geoff

I cannot edit MyStuff_FreshInstall.dat

I get a dialog box saying: Windows cannot open file.
To open this file, windows needs to know what program created it.
Windows can go online and look it up automatically. Or you can select manually.

I have tried notepad and wordpad but nothing seems to work. ?
I am not connected to the internet at this point in time.

I haven't yet tried editing InstallScript101.txt

You should be able to "Open with" Notepad - it doesn't contain anything.

You could rename by sticking an X in front of it and then create a new empty file of the original name.

Sounds like you're clicking/double clicking the file.

Just right click, there should be edit with notepad or just edit that you can then select.

Or run notepad and open the file from there.
