TopfHDRW with Altair?

Post by davidbarton »

I'm copying some files from a Toppy which has failed onto another one.
I revived my old computer which has an IDE bus so that I could use TopfHDRW to retrieve the files from the failed machine's hard disk.
I opened up Altair, and found that it coludn't see the Toppy drive, so I've started a two stage process of copying to the D: drive using TopfHDRW, and transferring them from there to the working Toppy.

But I can't help wondering if there is a way to do it in one step.
Might Antares be able to do it?
Or is there another method?

I think the 2 step approach is the only one.

You must initialise the new drive in the toppy, and you can then put it in the pc to copy the recordings back using TopfHDRW again.

Don't use TopfHDRW for the small "system" files/taps, just use it for the recordings.

It's not a new drive in the other Toppy, so I don't need to do any initialisation :-)

As it happens, it would have been quicker to open up the second Toppy and use TopfHDRW to transfer the programme files from the D: drive to its hard disk than doing it via USB.

Unless you are only copying a couple of recordings, it should always be faster to connect the disk directly to the pc and use TopfHDRW.

Not all Pc's have a connector for an extra disk so, if one falls into this category, one needs to buy a IDE/SATA2 adapter (with power supply) - around £10 on ebay.

Thanks Geoff,

I do have a SATA/IDE adaptor, but haven't tried it yet.
It was actually simpler to get the old PC up on the bench than to mess about with the current PC which is tied up in my computer desk.

ISTR somebody posting about a mod which they had done to a Toppy so that the IDE connector was barreled outside the case in order to (comparatively) easily connect it to a computer.
It involved cutting a slot in the metalwork, so I never tried that either :-)
