Looking for a TAP but don't know the name...

Post by JazL »

Hi all

Finally managed to get registered! :D First off I would like to say thanks for all the invaluable support this site has offered over the years; without this our two Topfields would have most likely gone the way of the Dodo years ago. As it stands, the only thing likely to see them off now will be the end of standard definition TV, whenever that happens.

So... I still have in regular use two TF5800s, and I have got by finding TAPs on archived websites on the Wayback Machine since their host websites disappeared and they were no longer offered via this site. I'm sure there'll be others, but the question I have today is about a TAP which was on one of my machines when I got it, but it needed a reset and I was never able to find it again. What it did was to put all recordings that formed part of the same series in a folder. Can anyone recall its name, and possibly give me a lead as to where I might find it again please?

Thanks again, Jaz

There used to be a filer.tap (I don't have a copy) but not sure it runs on a TF5800

Your best bet, if you can't find what you want, is to install BobD's MyStuff (using my GCBMyStuffInstaller program). This will give you a lot more than something like filer would do (it will also transform your use of the toppy)

I'm assuming that by "reset", you mean that the disk was corrupted and you had to reload it.
Should this happen again, be aware that I can recover the data on a corrupted disk.

Actually, I only recover recordings from a corrupted disk although I could possible recover a tap if really required.

Hi Geoff... I was given the machine in question about 10 years ago when the owner was moving up to the then latest-and-greatest, it ran happily for a few months before one day the HD failed (repeated clicking noises from the head) and I had to stick a new one in. It was running MyStuff and a few other taps, and was organising recordings into folders automatically as I described.

Then the HD failed (lots of clicking from the head and nothing else) so I replaced it and reinstalled MyStuff and a few other bits, but from that point on it has always just dumped all its recordings into the archive flat. I did read the MyStuff manual, but I couldn't see how to do it in there, so assumed it must have been another TAP that did it?

First thing to check is that you had all the capacitors changed in the PSU ?
If not, you need to do this ASAP (this also applies to your other toppy). Contact andyfras for his upgrade services.

MS will auto file if you set option L5 (Display any MyStuff screen and press Menu to access the options)

If you want to put MS on your other toppy then the installer is on my GeeCeeBee.co.uk site (or click link in my signature)

All caps have been changed in both machines' power supplies, I got the kit from Andy Fraser some years after the disk failure when one of them started turning itself on/off unexpectedly, forgetting reservations etc. It was definitely the disk that had failed on that occasion though, I hooked it up to an old desktop I had at the time and it just clicked.

Thanks for the tip re: MyStuff - will try that now! Just been for a quick look at your website, and TopManager looks really interesting. I'll have to have a proper read of what it does.

The only other ongoing issue I have is finding a copy of Antares... the website is on the Wayback Machine but not the software itself, sadly.

Great stuff, and thanks again!

I didn't realise that Antares and, more worrying Z4t, are no longer available from Henry Haselgrove (q-bits) website.

He has put the sources into GitHub but alas no built executables. This means someone would need to be able to build the .exes from scratch.

I do have some kits that I downloaded in 2014 but I haven't used them for years as I've always access Henry's website when I needed them i.e. they may not be current.

From looking at the various versions of that website on the Wayback Machine I can see that the last updates to Antares or Z4t were in 2011, so anything you downloaded in 2014 should be the most recent versions.

Thanks for that info Jazl

I'll wait to see if Henry makes the page available again as it contains all sorts of information about Antares and Z4t

The information is still accessible at least:
I too checked the archive site earlier today and the .exe files are missing :(

Ideally the later (last) version is required. The early versions didn't allow the direct download of .tfd files via USB on Toppy startup (before the proper Toppy boot). This may be required to rescue a Toppy when corruptions cause it to stick in a cyclic start-up sequence that never ends.

My old XP disk has the following files
* Antares1-1.exe
* z4t.exe
Both these were download on 15 Dec 2014 and are binary identical to files downloaded on 15 May 2012

My Win 10 disk also has an Antares.zip file (downloaded in Dec 2017 whose single file is binary identical to the other Antares 1-1.exe
I can't find a more recent dated z4t file

So, I'm guessing these are the latest kits although others may have files with more recent download dates

Henry hasn't read my PM yet (it is still in my Outbox)

I checked the details of the copy of Antares 1.1 I have, details show it was "last modified" 15/05/2012 04.01
The copy of Z4t shows "last modified" 26/02/2013 14.40
I've put both of them in the Downloads area of my website if anyone wants them https://jlawson.co.uk/downloads/category/2-toppy
