S/PDIF audio delay setting

Post by Frank Haemorrhage »

I'd like to use some wireless headphones with my TV. Naturally lip sync is a problem and the TV doesn't have a setting for audio delay on its S/PDIF output. So instead, I wondered if the digital audio out on a Topfield was adjustable. I cannot find a setting on my 5800. Should I get my 5810 out of the cupboard, can it adjust the audio delay on the S/PDIF output?

As far as I know there is no audio delay setting on the Topfield.

However, presumably your wireless headphones are, if anything, adding delay so you'd like the audio to be earlier. Your TV should delay its audio outputs to match whatever processing time it takes for the picture so, in principle, the Topfield output would be earlier with respect to the picture, albeit not adjustable.

Having said that, I have frequently found the lip-sync on Freeview to be off, sometimes by quite a bit. Make sure you are actually seeing a consistent problem due to your headphones and not one inherent to the source.

No "naturally" about it. I use RF wireless headphones fed from the analogue audio output of the PVR or other device and there is no delay. However, if you are thinking of Bluetooth wireless headphones then, yes, there could well be a noticeable delay. My Suggestion? Go RF.
