.rec file properties - PC explorer extension?

Post by SunnysideUK »

Hi,
Been doing some admin on my 3 toppies. Recently replacing the PATA with a SATA drive to one (my thanks to andyfras).
Currently archiving with intention of copying files to the drive/s. There are duplicates between the toppies and I'd prefer to keep the better quality ones (I tend to rough remove the adverts, etc on the toppy after recording).

However I've been using TopfHDRW 0.21.0.8 (& Antares 1.1) to read the program descriptions to use to change the file names to aid identification.
TopfHDRW is only reading the files on my local drive (not the USB connected local toppy drive)

TopfHDRW implies I can edit the description (Antares reads only) but all data is stored in a box marked Short Event Description (Max. 63 char.)
The box below marked Long Event Description (Max. 1023 char.) are empty.
If I try and edit the short box, say to remove the annoying New: prefix will prompt an error as the existing short description is still over 63 characters!

Guess I could move the short to the long and reduce the short desc. but I haven't tested this out on a toppy yet. and it`ll add to my processing work.

Also I would like to have an explorer (PC) context option to show file description/properties to a floating pop-up showing that.

Is there any windows explorer extension that does this?
I have a copy of "Taps.exe" stored under a folder I named "Explorer ext" however either its corrupt or more like it does not work with my Windows 7 x64 that I've been using for the last 7 years.
Ref. "Taps.exe" file details: 30 ‎July ‎2011, ‎21:35:01 13KiB (13,312 bytes).

Regards, Neil.

I think your right, its name makes sense too.
Must have been desperate thinking on my part!

RecShellExt looks the business. I've not used it but the related TFRecEdit seems fine on Win10.

Good luck. :)

I can confirm that TFRecEdit works on Win10. Couldn't get recshellext to work on Win10 or Win7 (both 64bit)
I'll try it later on my old notebooks which are 32bit Win7 and XP.

Same here, doesn't work on my Win7 x64.
Installs without error but just does not give the results. Shame, did look promising.

Thanks for that reply anyway and the link to SimonC's resources.

Just tried it on my notebooks, works fine on a N110 (32bit XP) and on a N210 plus (32bit Win7 Pro) 8)
Also played about with the compatibility troubleshooter in Win7 64bit and it diagnoses it as incompatible :(

You might get results launching file explorer in 32bit mode... https://www.morovia.com/kb/Howto-Launch ... 10610.html At least it's a quick test rather than, say, installing a third-party 32bit file explorer.

I think it's safe to say that the last version of Windows that I used the shell extension on was Windows 7 32 bit! Some good news is that it all still compiles and builds, sort of. There seem to be some caveats when running on Windows 10, in particular, if you've VLC (for example) to always open .rec files, that setting overwrites the shell extension. Apart from that, I don't see anything that'd prevent me building a 64 bit version :-)

It sort of works on Win10.(64) On the propertues/details tab the headings are there, but no info. Nothing at all on Win7(64). Tried a couple of 32bit file explorers and opening a 32 bit windows explorer, no joy with any of these.

I've done a 64 bit build which seems to work OK on Win10 64 bit, which you can download here. It's not on my Toppy site as I've mislaid the password. It's been a while :)

Troubleshooting

Windows 10 has introduced yet another place where it tracks which apps open which file types. Initially the new version didn't work for me, until I removed this registry key:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.rec

This must've been set when I asked Windows to open a .rec file in VLC at some point a few years ago!

You can do this from an elevated command prompt using the following

Code: Select all

REG.exe DELETE "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.rec
The installer should be self contained. If you still can't get it working, try installing the Microsoft VC runtime

Thanks for updating it Simon 8)
Works fine on Win10, installed no problem.
Out of curiosity I tried it on Win7 (64bit) but wouldn't install kept failing with a RegSvr error, updated my VC runtime installation to the one you linked to and it then installed OK and it works 8)
Thanks again :D

It was interesting exercise in "will this old code work after 10 years" :) I'm a little surprised it was as straightforward as it was, especially the install on Windows 7!
