Requiem (?) for a Toppy

Post by RobinP »

Alas it was moved into the bedroom having succumbed to a BT (Humax) box along with my BT "upgrade" for the lounge TV.
Then discovered that both remotes (bedroom tv & Toppy) clashed making even the simplest of recording tasks impossible.
Subsequently became a clock until replaced with a "smart" Hey Google! contraption which gives my wife the creeps (worth it just for that ;)
As a side note, loads of problems with the BT box remote being u/s, also reported on their forum, turns out it was the coiled spring contacts for the batteries being shoved down into the housing as you push the battery in was causing it!
Err.. whose been recording ALL the SOAPS???

fwiw the 5800 can be made to use the 5810 remote codes, and vice versa.

I have now bought a Scart to HDMI upscaler - so it should be better (HDMI to Scart are also available. They aren't interchangeable !).
I was going to ask if this converter was any good, but I think Alan has covered what I was about to question!

Did the Toppy have a great reputation? The box was ONLY popular and well loved because the native firmware supplied by Topfield was replaced with something better. If it wasn't for bug fixes or enhancements supplied by users all Toppy boxes would have been in landfill a decade ago, and after Topfield abandoned its UK user base.
True it's credit to the users/this forum that made Toppys very good, patches, taps and MyStuff is SO good!

A bit of chicken/egg here, if Topfield hadn't made the open API for TAP's available then
MyStuff wouldn't exist
However I totally agree if it hadn't been for all the people who wrote the TAP's (and still support them) then we we wouldn't be having this discussion, Toppies would be long gone

I couldn't agree more.

It totally relied on the great guys out there (thanks to each and every one of you) - but at least it was 'get at'able', for you guys to make it special, especially for knob'eads like me.

Stay safe folks

I still have a 5800 working well, though I suddenly found I couldn't use Antares on the PC after the latest Win10 "upgrade" to 20H2 and had to reinstall the z4t driver.

All credit and many thanks to Geoff Bacon and everyone else here for your commitment and great advice over the years.

Thanks for the mention but most of the work was done by others finding out how the Toppy works. My involvement has primarily been repackaging/improving this to make it a bit easier to use (I've also enjoyed the puzzles coding it)

Just tripped over this thread having cause to refer to forums lately.

My TF5800 facelift is still in daily use. Just had to do the PSU caps (thanks Andyfras). It has the hard drive from my old original TF5800 bought in 2005. Disk is about to expire so might go for a SATA drive; I have one from a dead Humax DTR1010 I was given so might try that first.

Toppy is used to watch 99% of TV. Like others iplayer and the like are painful to use compared to just recording and timeslipping on the Toppy.

I have bought a few Humax's for friends and family as the only thing to get. How awful. In the end I picked up an FVP5000 for myself as insurance against loss of Toppys. All Humax's were bought for less than £100 in J Lewis outlet.

Recently I tried to use my Humax as my main recorder; it has been hell; several button presses to do things; a programme guide that is hard to read, it's easier to look it up online. Of course it is the taps and MyStuff in particular that make the Toppy such a joy.

I was shocked but not surprised to find the change to toppy.org.uk. The loss of this resource will probably be the end of the Toppy as it's the help of the community that allows us all to keep our Toppys going when they need a bit of TLC.

Thanks to everyone who has made it possible for the Toppy to still be used after all this time.

Phil

The forum is far from gone yet and most of the taps are still available, just hosted elsewhere, AFAIC it won't be forum changes that kill the Tpoppy it will be lack of SD channels

Re: Anybody still using a Toppy as their main viewing platform?

Post by Salopian »

I have just got a Quad HDHomeRun box. It ingrates with Plex and gives live TV and recording. My Toppy is now only used to feed Freeview via RF to the little TV in the kitchen. The Toppy has given great service. Thanks to MyStuff it has been used long beyond the time any other device would have lasted.
