To answer my own question I found this post and created a modified batch file, all I have to do is put a copy of the file in the folder I want to process and run it, works great.
SonicLife wrote:Nope that won't work, if you want to process multiple files in one go use something like the following in a .bat file.

Code: Select all

@echo off
for %%a in (*.rec) do (
echo %%~fa
start "rec2mpgd" /WAIT /LOW call "C:\Program Files\rec2mp3\rec2mp3.cmd" "%%~fa"
)
pause
You will need to remove the pause from the end of the rec2mp3 script to make it continue without the key press.

I'll have a think about how best to improve things for multiple file processing, I'm open to suggestions.
My file is

Code: Select all

@echo off
for %%a in (*.rec) do (
echo %%~fa
start "rec2mkv" /WAIT /LOW call "C:\Program Files\rec2mkv\rec2mkv.cmd" "%%~fa"
)
pause
and I removed the pause at the end of rec2mkv script
Many thanks to SonicLife for creating rec2mkv 8) wish I'd found it years ago :D

@jimi - does that script wait for the previous rec2mkv process to finish before starting the next one? I'd be worried it went through the list starting the whole list in parallel! That might slow down your PC ;) If it is does that, you can use "call" rather than "start", and it will all stay within the same process. You won't be able to set the priority to low, though.

[Edit]I've just seen the "/WAIT" option for Start, which I'd not seen before. That makes it wait for the process to complete before proceeding - D'oh![/Edit]

As you correctly deduced, it processes one at a time.
I ran it on a folder with 10 .rec files (all around 600/700Mb) and it took around 5 minutes to complete. My CPU usage barely went higher than 50% mostly around 30-40%. Very happy with it 8)

Further to this, turns out my "smart" TV isn't so smart, it doesn't recognise this flavour of mkv. I'll try rec2mpg when I get time. But I have a feeling the TV won't play that either. I suspect I'll be back to Handbrake.

8) I also had a look on my server and found I have
rec2mpg.zip
rec2mkv.zip
I'll add them to the downloads section on my website when I get a chance.

EDIT
added here https://jlawson.co.uk/downloads/category/2-toppy

Since moving my radio recordings to my Humax Freesat recorder I have been using the tsMuxer free utility to extract the *.mpa audio track to rip to my PMP. This is a lot quicker than using rec2mpg as there is no conversion involved.

(actually my dish has gone out of alignment during one of the winter storms so I am now relying on get_iplayer to get my BBC radio programmes - dish realignment now on hold until end of lockdown - and that is a slow process back on a par with rec2mpg)

A big thank-you to:

SonicLife for creating the REC2MPG software!
YorkshireJumbo for recommending it here
jimi for posting the batch script

Alas, I haven't been able to get it working. When I run the script, it starts processing, but then I get a ProjectX error, and at the same time, WinRar inexplicably opens a ProjectX archive. Not sure what I'm supposed to do about that?

:? I don't understand what ProjectX has to do with it ?
What folder are you putting the script in ? Where do you have rec2mpg.
If you can post up a copy of the script you are using.

I'm just using the script you gave above. It begins processing the first video, then after a few minutes, WinRar randomly opens a file (the file is "ProjectX.jar" from the ProjectX sub-folder within the main rec2mkv folder).

Edit: I've just looked up the .jar extension and as well as being an archive format, the extension is also used by Java, which I don't have installed. Does anyone know if you need to have Java installed for this program to work?

ProjectX is an application designed to clean up and demux DVB streams amongst other things, according to google.

I'm pretty sure you need to have Java installed for it to work, I certainly have Java installed on both my 32 & 64 bit PC's I ran rec2mpg and rec2mkv on both when I originally tried them out.
