Move disc from 5800 to 5810?

Post by mavison »

My faithful 5800 (see sig) is still in daily use, but I am contemplating getting a new TV - which will only have HDMI inputs, not SCART.

I will be getting another PVR of some sort, but as an interim I thought it should be possible to move my 1TB disc+SATA convertor to a 5810, which does have HDMI outputs. If so, I can probably find a suitable one for sale, and it would probably avoid having to download and probably convert a significant number of recordings over USB.

Can anyone confirm whether a disc transplant is practical, and if there are any snags?

I don't believe there is an issue swapping the disks.

The other alternative is that you use a Scart to HDMI connector cable

Just remembered that the recording headers are different between the two models.
I suspect that a TF5810 (the later model) can process the TF5800 recordings but perhaps not the other ways round.

I suggest you choose the TV you want and give it a try - if you find you can't play the existing recordings, put the disk back in the 5800 and use a converter to connect to the new TV

Thanks for your thoughts, Geoff. I was not aware that convertors were so available, and for a reasonable price. I had vague memories that they were expensive, but maybe I was thinking of VGA to HDMI. In fact, there are too many to chose from!

Thanks for the warning that the recording headers may be different - can anyone confirm that?
But I am thinking that rather than risking buying a 5810 and finding it will not work, a convertor might be a better bet.

I had assumed you already had a 5810 - try a converter first.

Some modern TVs have AV sockets. They can be used to connect a Toppy to a TV without using an HDMI converter.

Following advice from @andyfras, I connected a TF5800 to our Panasonic TV, which hasn't got a SCART socket.

I bought a SCART to RGB lead, one of these: https://cpc.farnell.com/pro-signal/psg0 ... z3EALw_wcB. The SCART plug goes into the Toppy and the RGB phono plugs go into the YUV/YPbPr sockets on the TV. The order of connection is G>Y, B>U and R>V.

Sound is carried by a stereo phono lead connected to the Red and White sockets on the back of the TF5800 and the corresponding sockets on the TV.

The Toppy needs to be set to YUV in Settings and the TV to Component Video on the AV input.

The result on our TV is excellent. The colours were a bit garish at first, but @andyfras supplied a copy of Vy Tap, which sorts out the colour balance.

Composite/video from my 5810 to the tv worked directly, I'd assume the same for a 5800.

Try it on your old tv.
