Did you fix the PSU? A faulty PSU can cause all sorts of weird problems including the "playback stopped" issue and hard disk corruption.

Seconded. Many PSU problems LOOK like hard drive problems. See Toppy Repairs and PSU exchange. I know that MikeyP has done a repair (as per your original post). Do you know how many capacitors he changed? AndyFras (the other repairer on here) routinely changes 13 these days on a 5800, and in some cases, there are some others that also need to be changed.

Thanks for the replies. Yes MikeyP did a health check on it but I cant remember whether it was 11 or 13 capacitors he changed. He did say that if it started to play up again then it would point to the hard drive. I found the list of drives on the link and didn't want to spend much more on this repair. I figured that I am already in for £25 I may as well pay another small amount to keep the box going until we move on to smart TV. I didn't know if there was a recommended drive other than a straight swap PATA. There is a Western Digital WD1600AAJB 160GB 3.5 inch IDE Hard Drive on Amazon for £22 is it worth a punt?

Toppy box sat on 'sparkies' bench for ages. Caps OK, HD discoloured (heat). Motherboard (possible heat problem or dry joint?) Thats it with buying PVR's. First 1/ Verty - worked fine but ended up with no downloads - box now in loft.
2/ Toppy - worked brilliantly for a couple of years - then problem after problem - box now in loft
3/ Hello Tivo - time to let someone else worry about malfunctioning equipment.
