I recently acquired a Topfield TF5810 and it worked well for a while, Now it is stuck on Channel 4 and has a banner across the centre saying "Verifying files and folders" On start up the digital display on the box shows C457.
Any suggestions on a fix for this would be appreciated.

Verifying Files and Folders normally means that the machine wasn't shut down cleanly, so it's checking (and potentially repairing) the file system. You won't be able to do anything with it until it's finished (although you can make the message disappear by pressing (I think) the Exit button.

I assume you bought it second hand, in which case, if it's happening regularly, and unless you know for certain that it's had it capacitors replaced, that may be the underlying cause of the problem. See Toppy Repairs for more info.

I left this running for a few hours and there was no movement at all. The banner box is frozen although the program behind it is on screen but without sound.

I strongly suggest that you switch it off at the mains until its PSU capacitors have been replaced.
