Back up Topfield configuration by RS232 not USB or regret it

Post by sutherml »

There is a huge amount of data on this forum about getting recordings out of Topfield models by USB, but if you lose channel data (freqs, symbol rates, FECs, polarisations, satellite positions) due to some electronic glitch there wont be any future recordings and it will take anywhere up to a full day to get it all back in by looking up lyngsat.com for much of this info as older Toppys cant do a blind search plus the hassle of sweeping your dish across the sky to re-capture satellite position.

It should be stated explicitly on this forum that Topfield USB driver for Vista will not work on Windows-7. Sure it installs and Windows-7 Device Driver Page says its all OK but the Vega program hangs waiting for a reboot of Topfield which cannot occur as the USB driver is non-functional.

So backup configuration via RS232 (null modem cable) which does work with Windows-7 using Vega_28Jan2010 (aka Vega_2.40). In this case when Toppy is rebooted by re-plugging it into mains power then configuration data is sucked out.

Apologies to all software gurus but I'm ignoring all Toppy Win-7 workarounds (XP virtualisations, Linux, Ubuntu, etc) since I never take recordings off a Toppy. Also as a retired electronics guy I am now a hardware and software minimalist.

As an aside, TF5000PVR users be aware that when the HDD on this STB if full, it destroys all recordings on the HDD. Perhaps that is good reason to suck them out!

Cheers,
Mike in Adelaide Australia with TF5000PVR and TF7720HSIR and 2.4m C-band dish.

Do you mind if I move your post to the OZ Toppies section of the forum? The main bulk of this forum is for UK models where drivers for all versions of Windows work over USB. In addition the UK models are usually aerial based machines and not satellite ones.

It's been said hundreds of times in these forums that the USB Topfield drivers don't work on a 64 bit OS and that's why most of us with 5800/5810 use something else

Accepted that the Topfield drivers don't work but there are other options as alan_m has linked to.

and you can probably also get Vega to work if you replace the TfDll.Dll file with the one provided with this (part of the Antares kit). After installing the driver copy it's dll to the folder containing Vega.exe (you may have to rename it)

You can probably use TopManager to replace the Vega dll
1) install the driver above
2) install TM
3) Connection| Settings - create a USB connection
4) Connection| Open
5) Tools| DLLs - Display (or something like that)
6) Scroll down to the Vega folder and double click to expand
7) Position on the tfDll.dll, right click and say Fix
(on windows 7, you might need to be using the administrator account to "fix")
8 ) Close TM and try Vega

Asuming TM works, you could use Snapshot| Take to make a copy of everything in \ProgramFiles.

I don't know Vega but I think Antares will probably do all you want.
