PS recording signed versions as well on BBC

Post by YorkshireJumbo »

I've set PSs for some of the science shows on the BBC channels. In the past few days, it's started recording the signed repeats as well: it's been happening quite a lot. For example, I've been recording the "Revolutions" series on Tuesdays and it recorded the original version and then the signed repeat a few hours later. Looking at the timers, it's set to do it again with "Revolutions: Smartphone" next Tuesday.

I'm not sure why it's just started happening: it's not happened before as far as I can remember, and it's not happening on other networks.

I've had this before and it was because the BBC changed the "signed" series ID so MS thinks its a new series.

The only way I found to stop those repeats was to change the search to a Text and limit the hours so it doesn't pick up the night time signed ones.

This is because the BBC haven't given the programmes the same Crid data
e.g. Normal program: Series: /m-4I6T episode: /m/4VQH
For the signed program: Series: /1m-4I6T episode: /1m/4VQH
Note: to display this info, press the Info button when the programme is selected in the EPG

As the series crid info is different, MS correctly treats them as different programmes.

Thanks guys. That makes sense, though why the BBC should treat this particular series differently is unclear.

Thanks for the workaround and how to find the series data too.

Think about all the non-Toppy, non-MyStuff users out there. If I need signed programmes I want to be able to set a Series Record for just the signed programmes in the series. Similarly if I only want the non-signed programmes I can set a different Series Record that only gets them. Using different Series CRIDs in this way works for the vast majority of viewers who have other makes of machines.
The question I'd ask is why all signed series aren't done this way.

I'm pretty sure you can exclude signed programmes from searches.

Try section 9.3.2 in the manual.

I only ever use Series Links to record programmes, this would have worked for "Revolutions".

Sorry - been away

Thanks ccs - it's been a while since I looked at the manual, but I guess it's worth another look.

My only issue with these "new" timers is that the behaviour has changed. Previously it would record the first one if possible, and record the signed version as an alternative as needed. Since they've changed the signed versions to have a new series identifier some time in the past week or so, I get both whether I want them or not  I could change to SS instead of PS, but then I wouldn't necessarily get the alternative timer if the first one failed.
