Record when no EPG entry

Post by anthony2l »

With lots of timetable changes going on with Wimbledon there was a period when BBC2 epg was showing "no information" or similar. I was watching the program at the time and wanted to record it - but merely got the message "no information".

Is there a way to record the program being viewed regardless of whether there is an EPG entry?

I find that a real pain too.
When I've previously investigated, I found that the native epg had information but MyStuff didn't have it.
My guess is that EPG2MEI is ignoring entries for programmes that have already started (and perhaps 2ish hours previously).

A couple off years ago, I considered writing my own version of EPG2MEI (using the methods in my PruneEPG tap) but life is too short

Theoretically, you should be able to show the native epg and record it there but when I tried that earlier this week, it wouldn't work for me i.e. there may be something funny about this sort of native epg entry.

What I did find to work was, use MS to record a follow-on programme (one that hasn't started and one that will go past any overrun for the channel i.e. not necessarily the next follow on programme )
Then, in MS, press the Record button for the programme and adjust the start time back to the current time + 1 minute (I didn't try winding the time back before "current time" so don't know if that would work).

The only problem is that I'm likely to forget how to do this when I next need it!

Thanks Geoff - neat. I thought there must be a way even if a bit convoleted, but logical.

In the good old days - just press Record on the old VCR - never a problem!

MS has long had an issue where it "loses" the EPG for longer current programmes and displays "No Information". Isn't there an app to dump the timeshift buffer to a recording? You could then record from "now". Can you record from before "now"?

@YJ
The problem isn't that MS is losing EPG information; it is that EPG2MEI stops providing info about the change in the .mei file that it passes to MS.

Of course, this wouldn't be an issue if MS allowed one to record "No information" as a programme.

Nobody is going to fix it now so we just have to live with what we have.

While there is a tap to save the existing TS buffer, this isn't going to record into the future - you would have to use the method I suggested.

What have you been watching all these 15 years? - obviously not recording any overrunning sports shows or what follows them.

Correct
I never record sport, I either watch it live (rugby or F1) or not at all. 8) I have too many other things recording to waste valuable recording time on sport :D

Seriously? Go and look at the EPG for any channel that doesn't transmit during the day, or at any long-running show like the Beeb's Wimbledon coverage, and it displays "No Information" after a while

Seriously! yes otherwise I wouldn't have written it !
I can't remember the last time I saw No Information on the EPG, other than jumping forward to the end of the current EPG data or occasionally after a HDD replacement or mux shuffling (it soon repopulates after such instances.)
Other than F1 or occasionally rugby no one in the house watches sport.
The only 2 channels I have that don't broadcast during the day are BBC 3 & 4
Obviously when they are not broadcasting the EPG shows No Information, but if I scroll to when they start broadcasting the EPG is populated 8)

For BBC3 and 4 the loss of these daytime epg entries isn't a problem but as an experiment try looking at tomorrows epg for BBC 3 & 4 during the non broadcasting time. Do you see epg entries saying something like This is BBC3 (or 4), Programmes start 7pm? Wait a day and try again around 6pm and these entries will have disappeared.

Tried your suggestions, early in the day the EPG showed "This is BBC3 (same for 4) for the periods when it wasn't broadcasting, scrolling forward into the broadcast time showed 7 days EPG data. Checked again around 6 and the remaining non broadcast time EPG showed "No Information" however the broadcast time EPG still has 7 days data.
I did some historical reading in the My Stuff forums and see that this seems to happen for programs/recordings longer than 4 hours.
Which gives the reasons I'd never heard of it
1. My tv is rarely on during the day, if it is I'm watching recordings.
2. AFAIK I've never watched or recorded any program lasting 4 hours or more
You learn something new every day 8) since it hasn't affected me during my Toppy ownership (I have 3 5800's) I'll just carry on blissfully ( but now aware)
To answer your other question Geoff, yes I have had recordings affected by over running sporting events, possibly a small handful since 2006, not enough to worry about :D
