As a matter of interest, if some naff data were to be sent from Toppy to PC how would we know? Will it bugger Nero/MPEG StreamClip/other? Will the size be a sufficient indicator?

I imagine that the beta tests would have compared many large downloads before and after the patch.

Okay, so I can't actually use the USB patch until a Vista-friendly dll has been patched, but check out the firmware version in my profile, huh?

Its getting to the stage where I want to hang furry dice and install neon lights and go faster stripes.

It's not necessary to install every patch available you know !

Yes I know, I've not installed the HDD detection patch as it has no benefit for me, unlike the rest (when the updated dll appears).

But thanks for the advice.

It does rather cut down the types of patches we can have in future. I mean, there's no point in working on a Duplicated Reservation patch since the letter D has already been taken.

A game involving anagrams is only round the corner.

None as far as I know. One report said it worked after changing which model Toppy was selected in the prefs, but that should be completely unrelated (as it only changes how previews are handled).

Does the patch remove the CRC check on uploads too? This might greatly improve the upload speeds or at least reduce processor usage on the various small Linux boxes, which probably struggle a bit with the CRC calculation.

The modification is only applied to transfers from PVR to PC. The opposite direction remains as is.
But I suspect it might be possible to do a similar thing for uploads.

That would be great. My Safecom Linux box manages 1.3MB/s for downloads, but only 650KB/s for uploads, probably because ftpd-topfield has to calculate the CRC for uploads, whereas it simply ignores it for downloads.

I like to edit things I intend to keep for repeated viewing on the PC and transfer them back to the Toppy. (Yes really :). My monthly bandwidth allowance doesn't allow for big P2P downloads, but I'm sure there are other who'd be interested for that reason.)

Btw, does the patch apply to non-turbo mode as well? Might leaving out the CRC bring its speed closer to turbo mode, due to the reduction in CPU demand?

Great work, shows what would be achievable if the USB drivers were written properly.

It might be possible to get better than 25% if the linux stuff could be got working. It is possible to get Linux to emulate a mass storage device over USB and then one of the various programs that can access the hard disk directly should work. Unfortunately I could never get the IDE driver to stabilise and then ran out of time.

I get a 20% increase using TAP and new ftpd-topfield on my Asus both on Mac (using Fetch) and PC (using Filezilla). Rates are 1.1 MB/s before and 1.3 MB/s after.
Was hoping for 50% but who's complaining. Well done Deadbeef!

[Edit: Must have tweaked something to get slightly better speeds now  ]

A quick test on the PC with a 7m USB cable gives me a 30% improvement.
