Clock display losing time on toppy 5800

Post by 2watch »

My 5800's clock display loses about 2, or so, minutes a week. I have tried unplugging it for hours/days, but when it's reconnected it always loses time after a few days. Could it be an easy fix such as a psu replacement?
Advice would be much appreciated.

I've not seen this as a symptom of a failing PSU, but if the capacitors have not yet been replaced, it's overdue.

When it loses times has it actually been turned fully on (not just in standby) at some point during those few days?

Hi andyfras,
I'm thinking that it might be the capacitors, as the box is probably over 10 years old, and hasn't had them changed, I will pm you to discuss.

Hi gomezz,
It doesn't seem to make any difference as to whether or not it's in standby or turned on fully for hours.

I thought the Toppy's clock was updated by the timestamp in the digital broadcast. When first turned on at the wall, the time is "00:00" till it has found a time signal, then it is updated whenever it is not in standby. Isn't that why we used to have to set a timer over the changes from GMT to BST and back?

Thanks to a speedy and very conveniant change of PSU, while I waited, by AndyFras, my toppy clock is now keeping time perfectly. He informed me that he replaced 18 capacitors in my old one, and that the old ones were all out of specification, some badly so. I can't recommend his work enough, it has given my machine a new lease of life.
