Turbosat "Graded" 5800PVRt (Firmware And Fans)

Post by MikB »

As the lucky owner of one of the new/graded 5800PVRt (facelift version) models that Turbosat have been clearing on eBay, I checked to see what firmware it was on. Pertinent bits are :-

Code: Select all

MyInfo B5.4 Logging settings etc

Ini file found
System ID: 458
Reported firmware version: TF-NPT 5.14.09+ dated Apr 11 2008
Base firmware version: 5.14.09

Running TAPS:
Slot 0: MyInfo B5.4 : Displays & records Toppy basic info
	Slots 1 - 15 not used

Installed patch list:- Bf Bq C0 Ce Ec Ef Ep Er Es F Gm H Mh Nf Pc R Rh Rp Rs S Sr Vt
Firmware Buggy Series Link F/W 14/4/2009 modified thus: -Ab-Ck-Cw-Em-Ev-He-Kt-Ot-Ra-Sd-Td-Te-Tp-Tq-Tt-We-Xw-Xl+Vt
Patch Decode Links - Will explain your patches:
	Buggy Series Link F/W 14/4/2009 :- http://www.toppy.org.uk/~simonc/dp.html?p=BfBqC0CeEcEfEpErEsFGmHMhNfPcRRhRpRsSSrVt
	Missing patches:- http://www.toppy.org.uk/~simonc/dp.html?p=AbCkCwEmEvHeKtOtRaSdTdTeTpTqTtWeXwXl
	Extra patches:- http://www.toppy.org.uk/~simonc/dp.html?p=Vt
I see that 5.14.09+ is considered "not good" firmware. I'd be happy to downgrade back to 5.13.65-with-nitfix that I'm running on a TF5800PVR (no T black panther) which seems fine.

It *looks* like there are different recommended firmwares for 5800PVR and 5800PVRt, and both of these are different content from the 5.13.65-with-nitfix that I originally upgraded to.

Is it safe to just use the existing firmware I'm using on the older TF5800? (C4.56) Or should I stick the latest (as recommended, linked from ChunkyWizard's site) on both PVRs? I'm not running MyStuff on either machine.

Also, is this 5.14.09 firmware what's keeping the hard drive powered UP (volts present) but "spun down" -- meaning the fan I've added won't stop spinning, and the unit won't go into proper standby?

The recommended firmware for both 5800 and 5800t is 5.13.65T. Just use the FirmwareLoader to load.

Thanks for the quick reply -- it seems you are saying the same firmware can be used on the 5800 and 5800t, but from looking at this :-

http://www.toppy.org.uk/downloads/firmware.php

under :-

Where to get the firmware files for a manual update

Before downloading any of these files, please make sure you know exactly which model of PVR you have, as is not possible to install firmware on a model for which it is not intended.

* TF5800PVR -> http://www.toppy.org.uk/~chunkywizard/F ... d_5800.tfd
which is size 1592499 bytes

* TF5800PVRt ->
http://www.toppy.org.uk/~chunkywizard/F ... _5800t.tfd
which is size 1592513 bytes

It implies there are two different non-compatible firmwares, and I don't want to brick anything :) As it doesn't say within the page above (or the link) what those firmwares are, I'm assuming they are the 5.13.65T that you speak of. But neither of these are the 5.13.65-with-splitnitfix that I'm currently running on my main 5800 (black panther) PVR (1599970 bytes).

I've downloaded the above two, and can load them from the Windows firmware utility via USB.

So I have a choice of 3 "identical" different firmwares and 2 "identical" different Topfields to update ... Hmm.

I've just read the guide and cannot see a problem...

Toppy.org.uk recommended firmwares:

TF5800PVR
TF5800PVRt
TF5810

For 5800PVR and 5800PVRt users who want to continue using the built series record function (which we do not recommend), use these firmwares:

TF5800PVR with series link
TF5800PVRt with series link

TF5800PVRt is the recommended firmware for a 5800t.

Or use the FirmwareLoader which does it all for you.

The recommended firmwares are 5.13.65-with-splitnitfix plus loads of other patches. The two versions are probably because of the difference in System ID, 456 for the 5800 and 458 for the 5800t. The "t" version contains the extra Sy patch that makes the System ID compatible with the original Toppy version.

Ah thanks, that would explain the difference between the three. So they're not exactly interchangeable then! I'll abandon the FW I'm currently using (which won't have the "loads of other patches"), and bring both up to date with the the appropriate ones on the site (as linked above).

Actually, it makes very little practical difference. All the [Sy] patch does is pull the wool over the eyes of those TAPs that hadn't been updated when the 5800t was released, to fool them into thinking they're running on a 5800 instead of a 5800t. I don't think there are any TAPs in common usage now that a) check the SysID in the first place, and b) haven't been updated to include SysID 458 as valid anyway, so either of the two firmware files would be fine.

But the Firmware Loader does all the hard work for you in decided what to install, so you don't need to worry about it anyway, unless you don't have a Windows PC.

Hmm. I ended up using the FwLoad TAP under its own steam, because for some reason Windows TFDN_USB no longer recognizes that I've connected a Toppy and switched it on.

The Toppy just goes into the normal "C4.56 -> run -> P001" and never picks up the firmware! Altair works fine, so it's not that Windows has forgotten how to USB, (again).

Anyway, that's 2 Toppies updated and all seems well, so far.

Thanks again!

Mike.

I have known a few UK users of Filer in the past. In actual fact I, myself, haven't used it for quite sometime as I got hooked on Media Manager. Clearly the number of Filer users in the universe pales into insignificance when compared to the number of MyStuff users in the village of Bobdicombe alone!

PS The stats off your link to the forum download site are meaningless as most downloads have, for many years, been from/via TAPWorld. The main reason for that is the ease with which comprehensive and up-to-date Toppy related material can be conveniently accessed.
