And Topfield PVRs have never needed capacitor replacements, hard disk replacements and updated firmware!

The original disks in the 5800 got hot and the 5810 comes with fewer ventalation slots. A slow fan can take 10 to 25C from the internal box temperature.

I find it depressing that even with the newer models we're still talking about the Toppy having duff circuitry and components as if it was "just one of those things".

My 5800 HDD having apparently died, or at least lost it's filesystem structure so recorded programmes are inaccessible, I am faced with options of a HDD replacement and accompanying correction of the manufacturers shoddy componentry, or a new blind 5810 box and HDD.

When I read here that for the 5810 box I still can't rely on the PSU components and will have to get my soldering iron out, I begin to think "Bugger that I'll get a Humax!"

If Topfield still can't (be arsed to?) fix their mistakes it's pretty poor, IMO

What incentive do they have to fix the problem if we find workarounds for it?

Workarounds, i.e. TAPs are one thing, having to replace basic components because they are substandard and prone to failure is a whole different level of manufacturing negligence.

'Tech heads' will always find a way to fix or improve anything, however they are a finite and self-limiting customer base. A reputation for awkward or unreliable product doesn't enhance sales, even if workarounds are available.

Just ask Toyota!

Disk Recovery

Post by PeterJHB »

If you have an apparent drive failure or corruption by self-rebooting of the Toppy, then contact Geoff Bacon in this forum. He has developed a DiskMedic software utility which can generally recover the files from the drive, if it is still in operable condition.

Just avoid any suggestion of re-formatting the disk and send it to him safely.

He does this for a very reasonable cost and can return the drive quite quickly too, with data reinstalled to run again.

He managed to save much of the content of my 500Gb drive from a 5810 recently and I can wholeheartedly recommend his services.
