The 5810 only supports series link firmware.

You can either install Taps to change the interface and overcome the firmware limitations eg MyStuff (use the installer) or use native series links as I do - see my sig for details of extra Taps needed. It works fine for me.

The ways to make it work have already been detailed in this thread. There's no way to make Freeview+ firmware allow you to add padding unless you set up your timers manually - tedious in the extreme. And there is no non-Freeview+ firmware available for the 5810.

So, you'll need to install TAPs instead to get padding in combination with the ability to record by picking from the EPG. The MyStuff installer makes that very easy (and you'll now get version 6.2, rather than 6.1 as previously posted).

P.S. My 70+ mum has a Toppy, but I wouldn't have dreamed have giving her a Toppy without MyStuff on it. MyStuff makes the UI much easier to cope with ;-).

ccs, Julie, many thanks for the replies.

I guess if the recording is done using the start and end markers that are broadcast then it should 'just work'.

However, having taken a look at the MyStuff manual I must admit I'm quite impressed. I'm very much in favour of functionality over prettiness (let's face it, the Toppy has always been the nerdy kid - smart, but pretty ugly [interfaces]). If MyStuff is stable, then it's probably worth some time to test.

If I use the 6.2 installer (claimed to have TAPs, firmware, skins and favourite lists) and then decide to remove it later, I take it I'd just remove the TAPs I don't want, then use the Toppy firmware tool to put the 5.19.09T recommended firmware back on?

It should, if only the broadcasters could be trusted to get it right ;-).

Yes, although you probably don't even need to bother reverting the firmware. What gets added is some extra patches that add to MyStuff's functionality, but apart from [Ab], I can't think of anything that would affect anything on a vanilla toppy.

Julie - many thanks.

I've now been running MyStuff quite happily for a few weeks on the 5810, and it's good. I do like the automatic padding.

I have found it's behaved a little oddly at times when recording two programs immediately following one another. I see that you get bookmarks for the program start and end (if broadcast) but in this scenario it'll often start a couple of minutes early for the first program, then instead of switching to a new recording for the second (on the program end/start markers) it'll record the end of the first plus a couple of minutes (thus getting the start of the next program) and the second recording is obviously missing the start of that program.

A couple of times it's recorded The Gadget Show on Five, and decided to record the next program as well (approx 2hrs).

Finally, if I go to the archive, it sometimes shows the (blue) rectangle where the programs will appear, does nothing for several seconds, then displays the programs. This can happen even if you've just brought up the archive, pressed exit, then gone back again (so it's not a 'happens only after boot' problem).

Oh, I got the Newlink adaptor and a 1TB Samsung F2 Ecogreen drive in the end. All working nicely with a bit of careful lead placement, and drilling out the relevant hole in the Newlink IDE plug.

That is perfectly normal for The Gadget Show and indeed for many programmes on Channel Five. The one main broadcaster who is behind the curve when it comes to this Brave New World of Accurate Recording.

Sounds to me like an Extend issue with post padding settings. Check both MyStuff and the Extend.ini has a post padding on 6 minutes.

Could be an extend issue, but I too get this with the Gadget Show and whatever it is that follows it. So more likely it's C5

Easiest way to "fix" channel 5's insistence on adding 2 minute news programmes (signalled or not) is to change, for example, the search for The Gadget Show to use an extra 2 mins post-padding (so +8 rather than +6). This way you'll add the news programme and Extend will see things lined up again nicely.

probably find that the follow-on programme is more interesting than the Gadget Show these days

This show is to gadgets what Top Gear is to family motoring. Trouble is TG is far funnier...

IMHO :)

But Top Gear don't have Suzi Perry. I'd rather watch her than Jeremy Clarkson.

Even Suzi Perry cannot persuade to me carry on watching The Gadget Show. That shows just how horribly bad the programme is. :(
