5.15.09T firmwire for a TF5810 question.

Post by mattstan »

My Mum has a TF5810 - when setting a program to record using the tv guide you can't make a program recording start early and finish late after pressing the record button twice, as I can with my TF5800. I'm intending to change the firmware to the recommended 5.15.09T firmwire for a TF5810. Will this firmware provide the missing functionality that I've described above?

Thanks.

No. The Freeview+ firmware relies on the broadcster sending information for the start and end times.

You could use TAPs to get the functionality you want.

Thanks Alan.

Is there a firmware that will allow it because she is fed up with the beginning and ending of programs being lost, which happens quite regularly?

I'm not sure I've got time to start learning how to do Taps on Easter Sunday but which would I install to achieve the start and end time alterations (from the tv guide recording interface)?

Cheers.

Why don't you install MyStuff 6.1 you might find your mother might like it :D

My mother is 84 (she cannot even work a mobile phone) and she has MyStuff 6.1 on hers, albeit that she only uses the very very basics (probably about 5% of what MyStuff offers).

She likes the EPG, the buffer start and finish on recordings, the quick jump forward to skip adverts (set at 4 mins, 1 min, 30 secs and skip back 10 secs). She also likes the recycle bin to recover any program she has deleted in error.

No, there isn't. TAPs are your ONLY option on a 5810 unless she wants to set up her timers completely manually (i.e. set start and end time, set channel, etc., with no reference to the EPG).

MyStuff (and others) will add padding automatically, and in conjunction with the Extend TAP (which the Windows installer will prompt you to add), will also use the Freeview+ "accurate recording" signals to extend overruning programmes (e.g. live sports, or programmes after live sports). NB: The Windows installer will need access to the internet during the installation.

It also automatically jumps over the initial padding to the signalled start of a programme, so you get the best of both worlds - the padding is there if the signalling is wrong so she can wind / jump back if the broadcasters get it wrong, but she won't have to skip over the padding if the broadcasters get it right.

Also, she (and you) can set up Series Searches to automatically record the things she likes to watch, and also - if you want - automatically delete the oldest ones as they go out of date. All of this is more advanced usage, though and doesn't need to be set up today! I've set it up on my mum's Toppy for things that have a limited shelf life, so she doesn't forever run out of disk space and doesn't have to keep clearing out old stuff that'll never get watched.

Do clear out as many dross channels as you can before installing MyStuff (all the shopping, porn, paid-for, probably children's in her case, etc.) so that neither the installer nor MyStuff itself run out of memory. Before you leave, take a copy of her MyInfo log and export and copy her MyStuff settings so you've got them for troubleshooting / Q&A purposes should you need it. And remember that it'll take a little while from first installation before you can see the MyStuff EPG. See **** MyStuff problems/questions? READ THIS FIRST!! **** if things don't go according to plan.

And lastly, set up your own Toppy the same way (or in known different ways) so you can more easily see what she's seeing if there's anything she doesn't understand or needs you to ask about.

If you had a little more time, I'd have suggested installing MyStuff on your own machine first, getting a feel for it, tweaking the settings to suit, and then setting up your mum's in a way that would be appropriate for her, but since you're off to see her today, I guess that's not going to be an option.

Thanks for you replies.

My concern with installing MyStuff is the length of time the EPG takes. My Mum is a 'low volume' user. She doesn't watch a huge amount of TV. The MyStuff EPG apparently takes 10-30 mins to fill. If she wants to turn on her Toppy to set it to record something, and then has to wait 10-30 mins for the EPG to fill, it will drive her nuts.

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Completely! It only takes that long the very first time when you first install it. After that, it's ongoing in the background so that when she turns the Toppy on the EPG is already there (unlike the native setup which DOES have to search when you switch on).

It will take MyStuff a little while to start up on switch on, but most of that time is spent running through all your searches to see whether any new timers need to be set, so if she doesn't have (m)any searches, she'll probably hardly notice that anyway.

Why don't you try out MyStuff yourself? That way you can make an informed decision and you'll be able to help her better too.

If you don't want MyStuff, then my sig would give you a working "native" 5810.

Fair enough - but I don't miss the start or end of programs so don't need padding.

Actually, you can do what the OP wants, in a similar way to the 5800...

In the EPG, press Rec, and then, if prompted, select "record single program" to give you "R". You can then press the Rec button again to alter the timer details.

Sorry - this does not work as I thought, although the manual does explain in great detail that it does.

The R EPG entry can only be edited if it was created from a "one off" (non series linked) program. Any SL program changed to a single program "one off" recording with the R indicator cannot then be edited.

I'm finding exactly the same problem - had a 5800, bought a 5810, installed the recommended 5.15.09T firmware, select a program, press record, select record single program, but then I can't edit the start time and length.

Got to say that's really annoying.

Is there any way to make this work, or is the 5.15.09T firmware smart enough to work on the program start/end markers that are broadcast (i.e. don't worry about it - it'll still record the program fine)?

Could/should I use the Extend tap instead, or is this not required with 5.15.09T?

Perhaps a better question would be: can I just disable/remove this whole series recording stuff and get it to work like the 5800?
