Possible upcoming site changes

Post by nwhitfield »

As you'll all know, this site has been around a very long time, and has seen little in the way of serious updates, especially since Topfield lost the plot.

One consequence of that is that the software running the site is now incredibly old. While it still works, it means that as long as the site continues running in its present form, it's impossible to update the software on the web server, which I really want to do, for security and other reasons.

In particular, the current version of the forum, and all the database driven stuff on the site uses functions that are not available in PHP7.

After a bit of work, it looks like I can drop in a fix from someone else that will keep the forum working on PHP7, without requiring me to do all the work of updating to a newver phpBB version, which honestly I think would be overkill for a site that no longer sees much traffic.

However, for the custom parts of the site - the TAP library, FAQs and so forth, it would require a rewrite of all the code that interacts with the database. And I'm afraid that I don't think that's really worth the time and effort.

I don't intend to delete any actual content, so links to files that are hosted here should still work. But they will of necessity be a litlte less accessible. Essentially, the site would be reduced to just the forum itself.

That would, of course, be a shame, but after fifteen years, and with a dwdindling number of visitors, and probably very few Toppys still in use, I think it would be acceptable.

The heart of the site has always been the community in the forums, and if I can keep that running with a simple update, I shall.

Thanks for keeping the site going Nigel. I think that you might be surprised how many Toppies are still in daily use.

I wonder how many people actually use much more than the forum nowadays. Some of the TAPs are no longer accessible as websites have disappeared and I don't think anyone really goes looking for them any more. Not sure if it's possible to direct people to general page telling them to ask on the forum if they need anything.

Anyway thanks for keeping it going, Nigel. It's appreciated by those of us who are left :D

I only ever use the forum pages so I would be happy if only that bit continues to work.

Many thanks for hosting the site: I've found the forum very informative and it has been a pleasure to interact with the other members.

Anything you can do to keep the forum going is much appreciated. 8)
As mentioned above there's probably a lot more Toppies still in use than you would think. The work done (and still being done) by various people has made the Toppy still a viable piece of equipment today, IMO the only thing stopping it being a front runner is the lack of HD.
I already host some TAPS and toppy related stuff on my website from sites that have long gone from the net and my logs show there are still regular downloads of the files so people are still looking for them.,
I'm quite willing to host any of the downloads from the TAPS section if needed just let me and we can sort something out. My Downloads section is basic but functional and I have room for much more here https://jlawson.co.uk/downloads/category/2-toppy

This change has now been partially implemented; as you'll see, there's a new page telling people what happens if they try to get any of the database-generated content from the www site.

The forums are running ok(ish) with the new database plugin, but will require a bit more fiddling before I can switch the PHP version
