Emails for Private Messages

Post by Geoff Bacon »

Hi Nigel

I received a PM today but almost missed it because a) the previous BB sent an email to say one had arrived (so I don't look for them when viewing the forum) and b) the PM indicator doesn't stand out (just like the old system).

I've looked through the UCP but can't find anything about sending an email when a pm arrives. Have I missed something in the UCP or is this something you have to turn on for the site?

Cheers
Geoff

[edit]Just noticed that the UCP doesn't provide any mechanism for specifying an email address so I'm guessing addresses haven't been transferred over from the old system [/edit]

Hi Nigel

Me again!

Is it possible to have a "Today's Posts" in the "Quick Links" dropdown? (ideally where Today is taken to mean the last 24 hours rather than since midnight)

Cheers

I was going to say that choosing "Active Topics" from the dropdown will give you a list of the most recent topic postings, sorted by date. At least it does this on other forums I'm on that have upgraded. But here, it doesn't seem to display anything :(

Maybe try "Unread Posts", it's not as if there will be masses to trawl thru', and you won't miss any older than 24 hours - another bonus.

Geoff
UCP/Profile/Edit Account settings allows you to enter/change your email address

UCP/Board Preferences/Edit Notification Options allows you to select when you receive email notifications.

Using the Quick Links / New Posts will show you all new posts since your last login

@jimi

Thanks for that

I'm not sure that UCP/Board Preferences/Edit Notification Options will send me an email when a pm is sent - the option is to allow users to send email to me (not for the forum to send an email when pm received)
Anyway, that was off so I've reenabled it and see if that makes a difference.

@ccs
"Unread Posts" might work - I'll give it a try.
The reason I asked for the last 24 hours is that, if a user updates the signature with TopManager, this counts as a login so any unread posts are no longer marked as "New".

Geoff
On the "UCP/Board Preferences/Edit Notification Options" tab the 8th option down under Miscellaneous Options is
"Someone sends you a private message" with the option to choose Notifications or Email (or both)

@jimi

Many thanks.

They don't half squirrel these settings away.

I was looking at Boardindex < User Control Panel< Private messages (which looks the obvious place to have it) and I should have been looking in Boardindex < User Control Panel< Board preferences <Edit notification options

Cheers

:lol: Trying to remember where they are can be fun as well when you know the setting is there but can't find it :lol:

Only for the user updating their signature, the New Posts search is individual to the user, ie if I update my sig your "New Posts " list won't change.

@jimi

That's good news - the olf BB treated it as a login and one lost the "New message" flags ( one had to go back to the indez to see if one had missed anything) - not that there is much to miss nowadays!

Thank god someone's on top of where all these options are ;-)

The only other phpBB3 system I look after is so heavily modded that most of this side of stuff is not used at all.
