While I agree generally, I would beg to differ over the use of the word impossible (maybe totally impractical would be better!). You can send any data you like over the USB connection really (ie my VirtualRemote TAP is a proof-of-concept where remote codes are sent via USB from a Mac app, and screen...

I'm not certain but I seem to recall there was some code like that on the BerliOS tap site.

Sort of. There are a number of systems where you can set timers based off EPG data from your computer such as the tgd/epg_uploader combo (used very extensively in Australia, but also works in UK), and also the mei/mystuff/jags combo (UK only I think). These both work by flagging the EPG data in a fi...

The Toppy should be able to handle DD sound (AC3) I think. Have you made sure that you selected that soundtrack with the remote (default is MPEG2 sound)?

Steve sent me one of the recent Aus betas that he had repacked but unfortunately it didn't seem to help with the USB 1.1 problem. At this stage I'm running out of ideas to try. :(

I'm not sure if subtitles are different between UK and Aus (they probably are) but here they arrive on page 801 of teletext. So if you want to extract them you can use ProjectX and type 801 into the appropriate box and set which format you want them in (srt, sub, etc, etc).

One very simple TAP that was written ages ago (and has never really been mentioned since as far as I can tell) is SoftMute, which rather than going 100%->0% in one jump, instead slides down the volume to zero and back, so it's a bit less harsh. It came with source code, so it probably wouldn't be al...

Only the first (Rev A/1Ghz) model of 17" were USB1.1, later ones were USB2.0. Also, if you look in System Profiler, if it says "USB Hi-Speed bus" on any of the USB listings you have USB2.

"java -cp ToppyEPG.jar com/toadsmouth/toppyepg/ToppyEPG" might work. Edit: actually, it probably won't. As for the USB integration mentioned on the author's page, MacTF can be scripted via AppleScript to download the file from the Toppy (or as the code is opensource you could possibly inte...

Also make sure you are copying to a subfolder. ie "G:\toppydownloads" rather than straight to "G:\", as i seem to recall Altair didn't like that.

Well, I did manage to get one upgrade to work via USB1.1, so it isn't totally impossible. I'll have to do further testing though to see if it was luck, or why that firmware worked with those settings but another failed. Plus I just had the idea that I could alter the settings on-the-fly possibly if ...

I should add that MacTF-EPG does not look for overlapped timers at this stage.

I had a fiddle before and as I suspected the problem isn't in the data being transferred but in the speed (and specifically the max packet size) of USB1.1 vs USB2. I tried a number of different values and finally got one transfer to complete, but it then failed on a different firmware. So it may not...

Hey, my name starts with N! Thanks to Nigel's great scripts and a couple of little changes to them to assist with the integration, MacTF-EPG should now work in the UK. I've put up the app at http://home.pacific.net.au/~noates1/MacTF-EPG1.0.dmg and I'll change my homepage (www.noates.com) when I get ...
