Sorry to be pedantic, but anthony2 hasn't invented a new tool - just rediscovered the old TV repair man's instant fix. Of course, that was in the days of valve (vacuum tubes) when the average TV had many more horrible plug in connectors than today's electronica! Sorry to have to out pedant ...

My problem is how to interpret the second set of LIST results when the -E argument is in use on the ASUS. The first version, changing times to be vaguer in the past, is just for human readability, "ls" does this too, no point quibbling over minutes when the file is years old :) The second...

Sounds a bit like these Plasticote (Plastikote?) sprays and dips that can be used to give a textured/grippy coating to tool-handles and other surfaces. If you strip it, you lose the "P E R S O N A L V I D E O R E C O R D E R" legend, the model number, and the motley collection of logos on ...

I've tried Fairy, Flash, meths, turps, label remover, degreaser, alcohol, and paraffin ... and you wonder why the front is sticky :) I'm surprised it hasn't dissolved entirely! Acetone? Liquid Nitrogen? Bleach? Mine is similarly afflicted, it's not (never been) in direct sunlight, but it's not just...

This is because it is up to the drive vendor how they store/use the raw values in an attribute and, in this case, they may be using the low 16 bits (0000) for a counter and the higher 16 bits for another counter (0001). Or in some cases, the lower 16bits is a count, and the upper bits is a "ti...

On my 5810 if the Toppy is receiving a signal from the remote, I have noticed that there is a light which flickers just bottom left of the time display. Not sure if this is in-built or a feature of the display tap that I use. On the 5800 that's a built in feature (it's marked "Remote" on ...

Re: Composite Output Poor Quality?

Maybe not relevant to your problem, but RG58 is 50 ohm impedance - RG59 is 75 ohm, which is what I think you need. Cheers, Howard Thanks -- you're right: Not relevant :) Although not best practice, 50 ohm, 75 ohm, or audio/screened cable with phonos on, it doesn't get any better. It's the same cabl...

Yes, we have a signal booster/splitter in the loft, which feeds all 3 Toppies, and I'm pretty sure we get utterly rubbish signal without it, so I don't think that's where the problem lies (we can try switching it off to check... but not at this time of night ;-).) If it was broken, the bedroom Topp...

Thanks! I've found the page you're looking at, I may well have to have a cautious poke around that area if I can't find my S-VHS to Phono bodger, er, adaptor.

Isn't the difference just due to the SCART connection being RGB and the composite one PAL encoded? No -- not in this case. I am using a single lead, which only supports composite. To an input that only does composite (analogue capture card in PC). The RGB/CVBS signalling thing is a red herring, the...

Re: Composite Output Poor Quality?

Are you using the _same _ phono cable when taking booth photos. Not all phono cables are created equally and a cable suitable for audio is unlikely to be ideal for video frequencies that 300x higher. Phono leads for video should have a characteristic impedance of 75 ohms http://tinyurl.com/njejzkr ...

Composite Output Poor Quality?

Possibly one for Andy F? Is there a known/common failure on TF5800's that causes the composite (RCA/Phono) output to look all weak and lacking in contrast? The composite out on SCART1/2 is ok, it's just the discrete socket. It doesn't seem to matter what output mode I cycle through, it always looks ...

Re: Toppy slow to start / flashing 00:00

When we switch our Toppy on, we're seeing 00:00 flashing on the display and hearing a clicking noise. It takes about 10 minutes for the flashing to stop Another vote for power supply. When cold, some switch mode power supplies won't start sufficiently to run their full rated load. So the box in sta...
