Glad you sorted it, didn't realise that HDDInfo reacted that way if auto-started :)

Some TAPS are not really meant for auto-starting anyway!

Odd. When you are in HDDINFO, on the first page, do you see :- Smart Supported: YES Enabled [3]: YES Attr. AutoSave [4]: ON Status: Tests passed ? You may need to press [3] or [4] (number pad) to get it to look like above -- although on...

One of the functions of the front panel board is to sense when you're not around, and do it then :)

A logical quibble here, but mine runs off a UPS too and can still reboot when it has "a moment" -- think software glitch, period of bad signal, etc.

It may not reboot due to power loss, but there are other reasons :D

...because they continually spin down/up. Basically, when there is no activity, the drive spins down until it is required. On pc's, some programs poke the disk every few minutes causing it to spin up again. The Topfield solution to that is to turn time-shift on, to keep the drive awake and busy :) ...

Although the .rec file "didn't show up", that's probably because it's filtering on file types it recognises, e.g. .mpg, .mpeg, .ts, .avi, .mp4 ... Have you tried renaming the .rec to .mpg and seeing what happens, as a .rec is an MPEG transport stream with some junk at the start -- and many...

The fault that you describe sounds more like a signal problem. Do you mean signal problem, leading to disk corruption, on the way to the total-disk-wipe? Which, for the OP, is a thing that can easily happen on a Topfield given ropey signals ... Tim Wonnacott's face (of Bargain Hunt) should not be p...

So the forum may be quiet on activity, but it seems a lot of Toppies are still out there working away :)

Two TF5800s here, both in use every day, and one spare in case of failure. They are the only recording/timeshifting devices in the house, unless you count get_iplayer :)

Ah, right -- in the context of "not working with MyStuff", then maybe that makes sense. The more general "MEISearch won't work" bald statement was puzzling :)

It looks like you need a single jumper fitted to the left-most (that is, next to the IDE port) pin-pair, if this is going to work at all :) Have you got any jumpers installed on the drive? (General pin settings/Master). Don't use the "limit to 32GB" version, with two jumpers! Of the leads,...

Re: Recovering recordings from Toppy's old HDD

If I simply plug the USB lead from the Quickport into the Toppy's rear socket, will the drive be recognised immediately so I can move files on to the new drive? (jumpers) ... but I can see no sign of anything like that on the drive, so guess it means, in my case, the Topfield which presumably has t...

Hmmm.

"Special" as in cheapest Chinese factory floor sweepings, or "Special" as in "High quality branded low ESR" ?

If the former, "may you live in interesting times" applies.
