Way back in the mists of time I connected a 3-connector IDE cable and had the “middle“ connector plugged into an IDE-to-USB adaptor. I also had a switch that could power the disk while the transfer was being made whilst the Toppy stayed switched off.

You could try a little vinegar at a time on a cotton bud and use a TePe interdental brush to gradually scrub away at the corrosion. If you have a spare wire guitar string you can pass it under the battery and use it to cheese-wire through the gunk. Or, you could try dental floss but I think that wou...

I've fixed signal issue in two locations by replacing dodgy/marginal aerials and cables. This site has lots of good information (and I've bought stuff from them at reasonalbe prices).

I think the main advantage in a Toppy would be slient operation. The SSD could run hotter, though, and some sort of heat sink might be an idea - to protect the Toppy internals from the heat of the SSD rather than to protect the SSD itiself.

Good to know you still provide a service. Voltages are still OK, though (I can read my voltmeter without magnification). At some point I had five Toppies so I might try to find their corpses and see if any are Lazarus-able. I suppose it is possible that some Toppies were just lucky in that all their...

Like you, PaulH, one of my Toppies has been used daily for a very long time - 12+ years with a change of hard drive just after I got it (for capacity reasons rather than for failure of the original). I did buy a kit of capacitors to change them prophylactically a few years back but my eyesight deter...

Consider donating your Toppy to Andyfras or selling it since it sounds unlikely that you'll ever use it again. Bits of it could go on to make four other Toppies life a longer, healthier life.

(Typing this as I look at my Colorado T1000e Travan tape backup that hasn't been fired up in 15 years).

It sounds as though this is not a simple manual SCART switch but one that lets a device send signals via the SCART cable to let the TV know that it is now on and that it is "the boss", as it were. One of the pins on the SCART cable (pin #8 ) can be removed to prevent a device from deliveri...

The Toppy 5800 uses a fairly exclusive IR code set (unlike, say, cheap DVD players which might use the same OR protocol and device number but have different command). A very few TVs also use the same code and some TVs (mainly Toshiba) use a similar code where some Toppy signals will cause the TV to ...

OK, I can see the point if you want 4 tuners. For 2 tuners, though, there are TVs appearing that have them built-in and I suspect that's enough for the majority of people. It will be interesting to see what happens - will there come a point where more of us buy TVs that can record and we shun the ex...

Whist crawling in the eaves of the house to fix a rogue wireless access point I came across another Toppy, still boxed, that I'd stashed away for a rainy day. Two of my Toppies are still going strong whilst other cheapo set-top boxes have died within a couple of years of purchase. Incidentally, chea...

Still got two - a 5800 and a 5810 - chugging along. The 5800 is like the apocryphal broom that has lasted 50 years and only had six new ends and three new handles. The husks of others lay strewn around my office.

I would imagine that gomez means powered riding - even then, 750 miles is impressive. I sometimes cycled 120 or so miles in a day and sore bum wasn't a problem but standing up after sitting down was difficult. A lot of your weight is counterbalanced by your legs extending whilst you cycle and you p...
