For anyone else following this thread, Andy has sorted me out with a working adapter and lead at a very reasonable price.

All is now working.

Do I need the adapter? can I just use a lead? The adapter is converting from parallel (Toppy) to serial (SATA disk) data, so is definitely needed. I suspect that the adapter you are trying to use is one of the Toppy incompatible ones (there are several). I can supply a tested, working combination o...

Unfortunately no joy. I've tried the cable the way you said, and the other way round. The only other thing I could try was the jumper on the adapter, slave or master or remove all together which I had tried. I also tried another SATA drive too. Do I need the adapter? can I just use a lead? I have a ...

Get one like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/18CM-Dual-Drive-Ultra-ATA-IDE-CD-DVD-Disk-Drive-Ribbon-Cable-/371953492448 Cut off the short end (black in this case) with scissors close to the grey connector. Plug the grey connector into the Toppy mainboard, and the blue into the SATA adapter. With so...

The 80 wire lead has a 40 way socket, the same as the 40 wire version, but there is a screen between each of the wires to enable higher data rates. The Toppy mainboard socket does not have an earth connection for the screen, but the adapter does, that is why the lead must be reversed. You can ignor...

Does this mean I can't change the hard drive then?

.
It's the 40 wire on both my spares, same as the socket on the adapter.

Did you connect the IDE cable backwards as suggested? There are several adapters that look like that, but the Toppy doesn't like them all; it's very picky. I've just tried it "backwards" as in, end to end, and there is no change, but I can't see how that can change anything. The same wire...

I've found that I don't need such a large disk in my Toppy, as I'm now recording HD content on my Humax. I'm currently running a WD 320GB laptop drive about 50% full. I can recommend the WD5000 green range and the Seagate Pipeline (ST3500312CS). There are several available on eBay as people upgrade...

5810 Hard drive change.

I'm putting a SATA hard drive in one of my 5810's The drive is a WD 500Gb out of a Humax PVR. I've used one of these adapters, I can hear the drive spinning up, but the PVR doesn't seem to be able to see it. Has anyone had any success? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XW6LN6T/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&am...

I run two 5810s in the same room by patching one of them to look like a 5800, but that would preclude use of the 5800 as well as the two 5810s. I don't know of any way to have all three. This is what I'd want to do, I wouldn't want to run all 3 in the same room. Could you explain more about the pat...

Toppy 5810 remote, frequency changes?

At the moment, I use a 5810 and a 5800 together in the lounge (yes I do record lots of stuff) with no problem, because the remote controls don't talk to each other. I have a spare 5810, If I want to use this, I have a problem with 1 remote talking to both 5810's. Is there anyway I can change one of ...

UPDATE. I have replaced the PSU with one from a spare 5810 I had, which I have found out, has had the capacitors replaced, and it appears to have cured the problem. C10 and C14 are domed on the one I've taken out so when my new capacitors arrive I'll get that sorted. Thanks to all for your advice. J...

If the PSU capacitors have not yet been replaced, that is overdue. Also the front panel clock battery will probably have failed if it has not yet been replaced. I changed the clock battery last year, but have never done the capacitors on the PSU. I've just looked at the Wiki page and priced them at...
