Can you only lock a recording after it's completed?

We record a good deal of stuff that's not suitable for our 9 year old daughter (the normal after the 9:00 O'clock watershed stuff).

However, at the weekend she likes to watch CBBC Saturday/Sunday mornings or play back recordings we've made of the childrens programmes during the week.

If I record something late at night once we've gone to bed on a Friday or Saturday, I don't get to lock the recording until the following morning. Too Late!

I'm not saying our daughter would deliberately watch these programes, but a simple scroll to the wrong one and hit play could bring up a recording we don't want her to watch.

Have I got this right?

If so, I'd like to see another "Feature/bugett" change that allows you to set the lock feature at point of recording. Like another option added to to the popup box you get when you press record twice whilst in the epg.

Well I'm staggered Shocked

Here is a machine capable of recording any programme you want at a push of a button (or two), but no one is concerned that it might be accessible to the young!

Shame on you!!!!!

No wonder we live in the society we do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bye Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

I too think it would be a useful feature. Maybe others do too... but didn't feel much to discuss on it.

I hope you're being deliberately sarcastic, and not yet another parent who thinks that everything in society should be arranged for the benefit of the 30% of households that have children in them.

Why should I be concerned what your children might see? They're your children, and I'd not presume to tell you how to bring them up. Equally, I expect not to be told that I shouldn't be able to do X, Y or Z because somewhere there might be a parent who won't accept responsbility for protecting their own kids.

Yes, it might be nice to have some extra features. But why the hell should it be shocking or shameful if we don't rush to say "Oh please protect the little kiddies" ?

I'll make the choices I want to as a responsible adult; you can do the same as a parent.

Nigel.

I'm sorry my post appears to have upset you so much.

My post was aimed at those with children, or who might have children visit them, 30% or otherwise.

I'm not telling you now, or in my earlier posts that you can't do X, Y or Z either.

I am trying to take reponsibility for the protection of my daughter by having another option to lock a recording at the point you set it up, rather than afterwards.

I have to say I'm a little taken aback by the tone of your reply.

I was just a little surprised that my request had received no replies for what I thought was an important issue.

My "Shame on you...." comment was meant to be a little tongue in cheek whilst at the same time perhaps prompting a response from those who had thought about it, but had passed it over in the delight of getting a PVR that actually works.

Since this doesn't appear to be an important issue for users on this forum, I'll live with this limitation. It just struck me as odd that Topfield thought it a good idea to be able to lock a recording, but hadn't thought through to well, the point in the process that you might like to apply it.

Maybe nigel can add it on to the request new features section, we can then rate how important we think this would be.

This is a feature I would like to see added but there is a long list of other features I would like to see addressed first. The most important being the bugs.

I'll certainly add it later (when I get back from lunch with Turbosat); I just thought it odd that I should have shame heaped upon me for not responding to someone else's worries about their children.

While I appreciate the need to stop children seeing things they shouldn't (that's what boarding school is for, of course... never did me any harm!), I do get concerned when we're all expected to go along with something "for the sake of the children," and that's why talk of 'shame' annoyed me.

Sometimes, this sort of thing actually avoids a necessary amount of introspection. Remember the Bulger case - there was no evidence presented in court that the children had seen a film, though there was a copy of it in one of the houses. The Sun urged people to burn copies of it, which is a shocking thing in a democracy, in my view. People became really exercised about something that may not have been at all relevant at all.

What would have been far more helpful - but introspective and uncomfortable - would have been to ask why our society is such that people who saw a small terrified child being taken along the road by other children felt that they couldn't or shouldn't intervene.

We should ask those tricky questions of ourselves, rather than going for quick fix solutions so often.

Nigel.

My main concern with the toppy and children is that they'll become better than me at using it and lock me out of my recordings. At least we don't have to worry about finding jam sandwiches posted in it...

I wouldn't bother, since the issue is clearly not one anybody is concerned about, judging by the lack of responses on this thread.

Regards
Hyde.

I'd prefer some kind of flag thing to mark something as watched. When you've got a folder full of episodes of something it's easy to lose track of the ones you've watched.

Here's another vote for having appropriate parental control features. I'm a Sky+ user - not wanting to get into mine-is-better-than-yours, because I want to get a Freeview PVR - but I'm struck that Sky's parental controls are much stronger. It's just a matter of providing the ability to be a responsible parent.
