I just wanted to let you know that there is a new patch accelerating the Toppy startup by approximately 1.5 seconds.

Technical background: The firmware uses a simple while loop for memory initialization. With some help from the cache controller the time for memory initialization can be reduced to a third.

Hi DeadBeaf

I tried this and it stopped my toppy from loading. Just got stuck on c.456 on startup and a blank screen.

Any ideas??? anyone else got this to work on 5.13.40 F/W?

Andy

Sounds good but I get a "Failed to load patch StartupPatch_03.tfp" error? Tried 5.13.40 and 5.12.88.

Do you use the latest version of the patcher (V3)? Please try to download it again.

FYI I've just tried it with 5.13.40 and the V3 patcher and it works quite happily and produces an output firmware without complaint.

So far I have not tried the new image in my Toppy though Wink

Well, I have now, and I can confirm that for me as well the Toppy hangs with C4.56 showing in the display and no USB connect/disconnect/connect cycle occurs.

Back to 5.13.40PH, which works just fine.

Sorry for the inconvinience. This is the type of behavior I had while writing the patch. I will take a closer look at the firmware for the 5800.

EDIT:
The first analysis has shown nothing suspicious. That is, the patched code looks similar to what is executed on my Toppy and makes sense for me (but obviously not for your Toppy).

@DeadBeef

Is the 1.5 sec "gain" as observed/perceived by the user or a translation of the code loop into seconds? In other words how have you arrived at the 1.5 sec?

I patched 13.26 without problem (with a hard reset after firmware update) but can't tell the difference in startup times Rolling Eyes

Before installing the patch the Toppy provided the first picture after ~12.8 sec. After installing the patch the startup time decreased to ~11.2 sec. I performed the measurement with a stopwatch several times.

EDIT:
FireBird confirmed 1.5 sec on his TF5000 MP.

Right now I would say that it is highly experimetal rather than safe because there was not much feedback yet. The only known "side effect" so far is that the patched firmware might not boot (see the two reports above). This is not very critical because you can flash the old firmware anytime.

I slightly modified the patch code by inserting a NOP operation. I would appreciate it if somebody could test the new patch on the 5800.

I will try to load the patched 5800 image on my Toppy (5000) to see whether it behaves differently. It might be a hardware issue with the 5800.

Same problem here with the 3a version. Stuck on C4.56, blank screen, no HDD spinup and no boot output to the serial port.

Firmware 5.13.40
Loader C1.01
Device v5.3.35
Hardware v1.00

It clearly runs fine on the 5800 BUT not the latest firmware! I'm running 13.26 and no problems so far!
