We have found that, as far as the Toppy is concerned, Channel Logos would actually be more useful (in both the EPG and the Arhcive) if they were simple, slightly different, yet uniform in general appearance (a la the BBC logos) rather than the actual zany technicolor mess. In other words a step up from simple text but short of the multicoloured, multi-graphic logos that are currently used. To this end it would be nice to have an independent TAP that could automatically generate such logos, on-the-fly, after a rescan. or integrated with MyStuff so that MS itself would then, optionally, generate and/or show the generic logos instead of the traditional ones or simple text. Needless to say it would need some basic artistic endeavour to design a "generic" logo set (again a la the BBC, i.e. enhancement of the text, colour, shadow, foreground and background shapes, colour, graduation, contrast,...) in the first place! What do people think?

I confess I do struggle to work out which of Channel 4's other offerings is which (apart from Film 4 which is clean and simple).

I find multiple colours and colour coding positively useful, so I'm in the "no need for this" camp too ... and I edit my MyStuff Favourites files to be in an order that is logical (rather than the rather aribitrary LCN order) to further help with knowing which channels are which in the EPG.

But anyway, surely this is an application more suited to a PC than the Toppy's limited processing power?

Julie

Smile If you remove/rename the logo file(s) then MyStuff already automagically generates special logos for you.

There would be no more processing required than that already undertaken by the likes of MyStuff!

Then you're just talking about text, not "plainer" graphical logos?

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't MyStuf just take the logos from logo.dat and smlogo.dat rather than "generating" them (so long as you have the logo files)? If you edited those files you could have any logos that you want.

Any TAP trying to create a logo would be faced with the difficulty of what to include in the text. Do you take the first letter?, first five letters? or what is your algorithm for generating your logo? Maybe you're better off without logos but just have the channel name and a method to limit the size and shrink the font for long names.

Would this link help? It talks about making your own logos.

Yes, once the logo file is generated then MyStuff uses it.
Yes, TEXT itself "can" be adequate but there are no special text formatting facilities for that alone to be as visually effective as logos.

At present every time a new logo/channel is introduced those who have an addiction to all things multicolour have to download the generated files either in a primitive (gif) format or Chunky generated format (logo and smlogo). I suspect that a large number of MyStuff and other logo-friendly-TAP users don't bother! What I am suggesting is a simple automated step up from TEXT and down from the current logos and in addition to what is currently available which would eliminate the need to keep logos updated - forever! Logos are not there for their own sake but to be differentiated from other logos. With a bit of ingenuity and artistry, automating the process is in fact, conceptually, quite easy to implement (makelogos TAP already performs some tasks needed for a standalone tap although that'd be a inefficient way of doing it).
My suggestion would ease the pain of updating logos for those who would simply want something a bit more fancy than text yet less glitzy than the current logos.

I suspect that a uniform look to logos would appeal just as much as those who want the logos to match the corp brand.

The significant factor is how easy is it to achieve both.

Since CW and others go to great lengths to create the logo packs and it becomes a simple one click update for those using the installer, or direct links to CW's website.

The TAP would have to be able to take a generic template and apply the text of the channel name or allow the user to apply some text of their own that would fit the available space in MyStuff displays. Is that what you're asking for? Sorry haven't read the thread Embarassed

I can see this has some merit in that you don't have to connect the toppy to the internet. But really how hard is it for most people?
