I currently have nero 6.6.0.8 installed. I've noticed there is an upgrade which I have downloaded but not yet installed.

As for codecs, I've tried a lot of players so it is possible one of those have installed a codec. The .rec file is mpeg though so I would have though it would use the standard codec. According Nero info tool these are the video codecs I have:

Video Codecs
------------

After a clean install I only have codecs

Cinepak Codec by Radius : 1.10.0.11
Intel 4|2|0 Video V2.50 : 5.1.2600.2180
Intel Indeo(R) Video R3.2
Intel Indeo(R) Video R3.2

Microsoft RLE : 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Microsoft Video 1 : 5.1.2600.0 (xpclient.010817-1148)
Microsoft YUV : 5.3.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Microsoft YUV : 5.3.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Toshiba YUV Codec : 5.1.2600.0 (XPClient.010817-1148)
Microsoft YUV : 5.3.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Microsoft H.263 Video Codec : 5.1.2600.2180
Microsoft H.261 Video Codec : 5.1.2600.2180

I will try and identify which ones nero requires to handle .rec files directly.

I'm surprised that you don't have MPEG-4. Nero digital converts to MPEG-4 according to details on the screen when you run it. Hence I would have thought it must install MPEG-4 codec.

Anyway I've run gspot over the .rec file. It says not avi, well we knew that, but gspot can feed it to direct show and get the results which are:

MPEG2_VIDEO
(S) --> Nero Splitter --> Nanocosmos MPEG2 Video Decoder --> (R)

MPEG2_AUDIO
(S) --> Nero Splitter --> CyberLink Audio Decoder --> Winamp DSP to DirectShow --> (R)

So it would seem that Nero is demuxing it then passing it on.

Interestingly if I try this on a .vob that NVE has produced I get:

MPEG2_VIDEO
(S) --> MPEG-2 Demultiplexer --> Nanocosmos MPEG2 Video Decoder --> (R)

DOLBY_AC3
(S) --> MPEG-2 Demultiplexer --> CyberLink Audio Decoder --> Winamp DSP to DirectShow --> (R)

Which suggests that Nero doesn't really recognise the .rec file.

If I run the .rec file through PVAStrumento to make a PS file (about 23s) then NVE will convert that in 25s and produce the same size VOB file. BTW that was with all on automatic and smart turned on. However, the mpg out of PVAStrumento doesn't have any sound. Try the mpv, mpa, separate video and audio means Nero takes 8 minutes again. I think the trick is find something to correct the .rec file into a valid mpg, with sound.

I have this sorted. .rec file into PVAStrumento. Use make PS to convert to mpg, but set under the expert tab set the relaxed TS input processing. That gives a mpg with sound. 5 minute file takes 25s.

Then I use Nero VE to make DVD and select mpg file. Set video options all to automatic and turn on smart processing (i.e. don't reprocess). Burn (or write to HD in my testing) runs quick, about 25s for a 5 minute file (compared to 8 minutes to reprocess).
