I am probably being simple but I just don't get it.
I know this must have been axed a million times before but i can't find a specific answer. and i am getting confused.

I want the genre and extended info, (on mystuff and jags) but i don't want to connect to a pc and transfer the mei file.
a lot of posts say that this is possible and that there is even a new firmware crack that makes the standard epg download this info without a pc but am i right in thinking that none of this will work on mystuff and jags?

Thanks

There is a TAP called Description Extender which allows other TAPs to retrieve the full extended info that is broadcast by the standard freeview EPG. I don't believe that this extends to the Genre info and AFAIK there is no way to get any other additional information without using some sort of networking arrangement which allows you to download the information from the web using MEI or EPG_Uploader for example.

The firmware hack you refer to is epg_extender and there's a separate thread in this section covering the features and development of that TAP.

Jags doesn't support a method of viewing any extended information, including Genre.

MyStuff does support extended information and Genre, but only from an mei file, normally downloaded via a PC, or the standard info off the Freeview stream via Jags.

However...

epg_extender can read some of the additional data from the Freeview epg stream including Genre.

I say "some", since the extended information transmitted over Freeview is not the same extended information that is contained in the mei file downloaded from the Radio Times web site via the PC. The downloaded mei file contains much more information.

Now then, this is where it gets a little messy...

epg_extender can output an mei file on it's own (although I've not tested this). So Mystuff could still read Freeview extended information and Genre, but cannot currently search it. Future developments of MyStuff will incorporate this feature.

Jags can't display the extended info or Genre, it can search it from the word search editor providing that you've got Jags menu option 29 set to "on", but this is only on the extended information, not the Genre.

This is where it gets even more messy...

The reason that Jags can't "see" the Genre is that epg_extender can only load this information into the "real" extended information box (the larger one shown at the bottom of the Toppy info screen that always says "no extended information"). Jags option 29 only searches in what's called the "short event description" which is the box above the Toppy extended information.

So you can get the best possible view from MyStuff and epg_extender, but only word search on some of that data from Jags.

The good news is that MyStuff and epg_extender are actively being developed and convergence is a natural outcome. Jags has released an early beta of Jags 3, which I've not looked at, so cannot comment on, save to say that it is very memory hungry having read the posts from those that have tried it.

I hope I've got the above correct, as I said these TAPs come out with new features almost daily, and I might be doing a disservice to one/all of them

It should do, but you didn't have this TAP in the list of TAPs you wanted to use. Currently it'll only sort by Genre, there's no searching as such, until you've selected the actual program and it consists of a series of episodes. Then it filters out the repeats I believe.

Again I don't use this TAP to be sure, but this TAP too is being actively developed, and you'll see additional search criteria added over the coming weeks/months.
