I've just got my Toppy today, all is well so far.

While "Recording by EPG" I can choose:

preselect/record/cancel
record/record by timer/cancel

What is the difference?

With the P it will just Play, it will not record but change channels so you will not miss a program while you are watching.

With the R it will record the program

With R+ it will record with times changed from EPG times (when you extend times)

Not obvious is it:

P = Pre-select ? the Toppy will change channels at the pre-selected time ? it will not record.
R = Recording mark ? this is your basic record from the EPG
Rt = Recording mark, but you have manually altered the timer (e.g. extended the duration, etc)

I recommend not using the OK button to set timers in the EPG. It?s very easy to accidentally set it to ?Preselect?, when you meant to set it to ?Record?. There?s less risk, if you use the RECORD button instead.

Unfortunately, only those timers that were set from the EPG are marked. Any manually configured timers are ignored, as are repeat timers ? they?re only shown for the first instance.

A bit of a pain, that one.
