The BBC has announced that it's scaling back its 'Red Button' interactive service on Freeview in preparation for the start of their HD broadcasts in December.

The switch off happens on the 27 October with Freeview viewers no longer able see the BBC News Multiscreen and for other content, including sport and music, there will be less repeats with content played out in smaller blocks of time.

Thankfully, all the +1, shopping and 'adult' channels remain unaffected.

What I don't get is why those of use who are still years away from DSO will suffer this loss of Red Button service while still not able to get Freeview HD. Mad

Does this mean that all broadcast transmissions in the UK are SD? I thought you guys were ahead of us Aussies re: SD vs HD transmissions.

The UK has had HD broadcasts from satellite for a few years now. Last year saw the launch of a non-subscription satellite service which included two HD channels. This year sees the launch of terrestrial HD services in some parts of the UK.

So basically they're combining 301 and 302 into one channel and making the programming less irregular and repetitive, and dropping the pointless multiscreen? ::shrug::

And then they'll move the remaining interactive channel off the current mux (which will be HD) and squeeze it onto one of the other jam-packed muxes, no doubt.
