Seems like a genuine bug to me - only seen it on channel 5, with firmware 5.12.09

When it happens you also get this message on the serial port:

..Generate engine event.(0) (0).
return null

You typically get about a second of video/audio, then the message before it goes black/quiet.

While it is black, the timeshift buffer is still recording properly, so you can rewind and see what you've missed. This seems to cause the problem to fix itself, as from that point if you go back to live, you get a picture as normal. The small preview buffer remains black for the affected period.

Had a repeat of the C5 bug today after switch on - same fix, by changing channel and going back to 5.

When this happens next, can some of those affected leave the box on the blank channel for a few minutes - I'm interested to know if the 'service is not running or scrambled' message will appear.

Nigel.

Hi there,

I had this last night. I had Improbox showing and I was flicking up the channels. I got a blank screen on channel 5. I left it for 10-15seconds, and then got bored. I also did a little experiment, I thought I would use Improbox to record it. My settings on Improbox are to record the programme including the buffer. As soon as I pressed record the picture came back. When I looked at my recording there was no blank screen!! I am not sure what this tells us but hopefully it will be useful...

Regards

Chunkywizard

Anyone still seeing this? And has anyone left the box on the channel for a minute or so when it does, to see if the 'not running' message appears?

Nigel.

Got it the very first time this morning. Can't replicate it though.

I was just clicking up through the channels with P+ from BBC1.

OK. This is now added as a minor bug (I'll make it a major one if anyone loses a C5 recording as a result), number 76.

Happened to me again this evening.
I left it for a while, but nothing happened.

Just a black screen.
Changing up and back fixed it again, as usual.
First time it's happened for a while.

I noticed this tonight. As well as switching up and down clearing it pressing pause for 10secs or more also restores the picture. I tried leaving the screen blank and after 7 minutes it was still balnk. I checked and the time shift buffer was there with the 7 minutes intact and I could play it in time slip and jump to live.

I have also found that if the PiP is set to Ch5 I can bring it up on the blank screen and see the Ch5 PiP and move it but the main picture remains blank. Exchanging PiP and main picture does restore it.

OK; well, it's not a confusion about encryption - that's why I wondered what happened after a while, if you'd get the 'Not running or scrambled' message.

I wonder if it's anything to do with GOP sizes on the multiplexes, as the operators try to cram more stuff in... anyone have the kit that will report on such things?

Nigel.
