Just to let you know that Manhattan issued an update to the T3-R box today. The new software includes:
1. Support for BritBox
2. Ability to watch a 3rd channel when 2 channels are recording (plus ability to pause and rewind the 3rd channel)
3. Ability to add padding to timers (previously start and finish were determined automatically by the signals).
4. HDMI control so switching on the T3-R also switches on your TV (Unfortunately this doesn't seem to work on my old Sony TV!).
They were planning more features but haven't managed them because of the pandemic, but there is another update planned for the first half of next year.

Thanks for the heads-up. I like the look of these products, and it's good they're keeping them updated. Items 2 & 3 particularly welcome.
If they had a MyStuff-like "power-search" feature they would be very tempting as a Toppy replacement. |

I believe there will be a search feature in the next upgrade - but I don't know exactly what it will entail.

Heh! That blog is good, I could almost believe they got hold of MyStuff and started picking bits to copy! It also answers a question I had about what happens with back-to-back recordings.
It's getting tempting! Although I'd have to do something with the 200+ hours of stuff I have archived on the Toppy... |

Enigma boxes have been doing what you want for donkey's years, but, tbf, terrestrial versions can be expensive.
A lot depends on how many tuners you want. |

Do you know of any Freeview recorders with an RF modulator? I find the Toppy feed to the kitchen very valuable. |

Enigma boxes seem to concentrate in satellite signals. I only want terrestrial. |

Mine (Xtrend) is no longer available, VU+ make them, but they're not cheap.
eg https://www.world-of-satellite.co.uk/VU
There are other makes on that site, but they tend to have satellite tuners as well.
Adding a usb terrestrial tuner is an option, I've had one for 5 years and it works fine. |

I happened to have that very one open in a tab. £478 is a lot more than the Humax Aura 4K Android TV Recorder . What do you get that is worth the extra £200? |

I like Enigma boxes, I've been using them for over 5 years and as far as my limited needs are concerned (freeview only), I can do everything the toppy ever did and much more.
I find 4 tuners are needed on rare occasions, probably a luxury but well worth it.
You can throw pretty much what you like at these boxes, 8+ recordings at a time is no problem. (4 max on humax, I think.)
During the Olympics I recorded just about everything the bbc was broadcasting, never saw a clash. Same during Wimbledon.
Not everyone likes them, but once set up you can leave well alone, unless you like "tinkering", like me. |

It’s true that Enigma are more satellite orientated and that Enigma boxes with multiple terrestrial tuners are becoming harder to find but don’t necessarily rule out satellite as your source. I have more free to air (with over the air 7 day EPG) satellite channels than terrestrial channels on my Enigma2 box. My main box has 2 terrestrial tuners and 2 satellite tuners. When I first switched from the Toppy to an Enigma 2 box I only went for terrestrial but in retrospect if I had the choice again I would have fitted a dish and gone for satellite only. Its now possible with unicable LNBs to get 16+ satellite tuners in some Enigma2 boxes and coupled with the ability to record 8+ channels simultaneously you will not run out of capability. Whilst recording I can also watch any of the same recordings in time shift, watch another channel live or in timeshift or watch a previous recording. |

Possibly nothing.
The Egima box will be more of a broadcast TV box/PVR with no catch up TV or catch up EPG.
The Humax is more of a mulitmedia box tied into Google for some functinality.
If the Humax is <£300 then it appears to be very good value for money compared to the Vu, and more so compared to some of the other Toppy replacements. |
