The 1st link works ok, surely the problem needs sorting at your end??

The OP didn't appear to see the defender error I saw when downloading manually...

It wasn't the Toppy that froze but TopManager

Freeview.dat should never be 0 bytes

Maybe it shouldn't have been but it was until I updated it, and as stated it is now 22Kb

You shouldn't have any issues using TM to install FvTxData.tsv; I haven't changed that web reference for a long time. Even if the web reference was wrong, I would expect you to have some sort of file in the \Programfiles\Settings folder

As stated the file is obviously there because I get a warning about overwriting, it is just not visible on the file listing - other files including Freeview.dat are visible.

Perhaps you've had a minor file system corruption at some point; you could try running fsCheck to see what it says.

FsCheck comes up clean.

Note: As with all unexplained issues, have all the capacitors been replaced?

As per my sig (if it is still there) Caps were replaced years ago with a kit from AndyF. In any event a constant file display error is hardly likely to be caps. More likely to be a software issue.

Sounds to me like a Windows Defender problem, I was able to download from both links on 2 pic's with 2 different av programs running (neither was Defender) with no problems. I also used Topmanager last month to update these files on 2 Toppie's (5800's) with no problems

It's not a windows defender problem, if you've got SmartScreen switched off, you won't see the error, I've got it switched on.

@jimi

Thanks for confirming that TM is working as expected.

ccs wrote:

Windows defender is not clever; it flags any file downloaded with the browser that it hasn't encountered before (I think it just works on the basis that new files are suspect and files that have been loaded many times are safe). The key words in my first sentence are "downloaded with the browser", TM reads the file across the internet and should not be affected by what an av program thinks.. This also explains why Defender hasn't seen it before (hardly anyone will have downloaded it with a browser)

@anthony2l
You say that FvTxData.tsv didn't exist after using TM to install it.
Were you looking for the file using TM |Browse or using Altair?
The fact that Altair can't see it implies an issue with Altair and/or your toppy.

I haven't updated my signature for a long time so was not aware that the "Update Forum Profile" code might no longer be working (possibly due to the site being relocated). I'll try and remember to check this in the new year.

I suggest you post your current MyInfo Log.

I believe that "empty/phantom MUX " displayed by CO is because the line being displayed is too long

Altair is ancient (and you must be running an old version of Windows to even use it); I suggest upgrade to Antares (and run Z4t to get the driver). This is likely to "see" all files. Mind you, for the number of times you are likely to need it, you could just stick with Altair.

Merry Christmas everyone
Geoff

Interesting - so all new file downloads will be blocked by windows defender, for ever.

They aren't blocked, they are just marked as suspect.

From what I remember, you can click "More details" (or similar) and then elect to download the file.

You can use Altair to update them on your toppy, or wait for Geoff Bacon for more advice.

The website states:

Freeview.dat (contains data about the channels)

Download Freeview.dat (created 11 Apr 2018)

FvTxData.tsv (transmitters and the muxes they broadcast)

Download FvTxData.tsv (created 14 Apr 2018)

But the files are actually July 2018 and appear to be the ones that TopManager is using and are now the files installed on my Toppy.

My Altair does NOT show the .tsv file in its listing, though both TopManager and Antares do.

Despite this I still get a message that Freeview.Dat needs updating when in Channel Organiser.

The errors are:

// Errors in 'Freeview.dat' detected by Channel Organiser B2.1 on 24/12/2018 at 12:53
// These will cause problems with status display, config files, and/or future LCN changes

SvcId for line starting: LCN=33 should be changed to 8362
LCN 39 name should be changed from 'CBS Action' to 'CBS Justice'
LCN 54 appears to have moved to LCN 55 - the entry for the former should be changed
LCN 57 appears to have moved to LCN 54 - the entry for the former should be changed
LCN 62 name should be changed from 'True Movies' to 'True Christmas'
LCN 64 appears to have moved to LCN 95 - the entry for the former should be changed
LCN 83 appears to have moved to LCN 76 - the entry for the former should be changed

That'll be because Altair will only display filenames with suffix's it knows about.

You'll have to ignore the CO warnings, we all get them.

CO is effectively always out of date as it requires someone to edit the file - this takes quite some time if one is diligent and want all the fields to be accurate.
EMJB created/maintained this file and I have now taken up the mantle. I did say earlier in the thread that I had new versions but I was holding them back until after the xmas period.

Unless there is a major change in the Freeview lineup, I only intend updating these files about twice a year.

Anyone needing iimmediate access to channel changes can edit the Freeview.dat using the information that CO stores on the disk

Geoff

Please elaborate where this information is stored.

Smartscreen FAQ

Smartscreen is part of Microsoft's I.E. /Edge/Defender software. I don't use (or want to) them, don't even have them installed.. Plenty other smarter, free AV/anti-malware programs out there.
To back up Geoff's comment about Defender, this quote is direct from Microsoft
Quote:

If a file you are about to download is known by SmartScreen to be downloaded by a reasonably large number of people and considered to be safe, it lets you download it without any warnings. If a file has not been downloaded much by others or, a small number of people downloaded it, then it warns that it might not be a safe thing to do.

No worries. Any programs I can't record will be on again next year so no rush. Merry Xmas all.

Pity that excludes everybody who does use windows defender.

So you advocate ignoring security warnings about files, most odd.

Geoff may be the most honest and trustworthy person in the world, but it doesn't mean his website is safe.

The OP didn't to see the defender error I saw when downloading manually, that is the problem, he didn't know it had failed to download.
