Hi

On one of my 5800's I found everything has gone.

This isn't my main machine but records several things a week.

Found it earlier sat with 'recd' on the display with no HDD running.
Picture it was out putting to the TV was grainy and still.

Rebooted and got a message along the lines of 'all data will be lost on format' 'ok or cancel'

I went for the cancel option. Now I have absolutely nothing on the HDD, no MS, recordings or taps. Just the native OS. The channel it was on is a little broken up on it's signal, could have this wiped everything by it's self?

Poor signal quality can cause a disc corruption, which can effectively wipe the disc.

Sounds like the system structures at the start of the disk have been overwritten.

If you don't want anything on the disk then you can reformat and start again.

I you do want what is on the disk then I can recover it for you using my ToppyDiskMedic (TDM) program - but you would need to send the disk to me.

Another alternative is that you can rebuild it with TopfHDRW but this will take you several hours and may require you to get an adapter to fit the disk in your windows pc. My experience was that TopfHDRW didn't work and ended up with me reformatting the disk after about 3 days - which is why I've written TDM.

Thank for the swift replies. It is just so annoying. Why that channel at that time went poor...

A weak point if it just wipes the whole HDD Confused

ie it can't be avoided in the future

Poor signal quality is a calculated risk, you may be ok.

Local channels are often very low power, and can cause problems.

If some channels are always poor quality, it would be safer to delete them.

The channel is question is Dave. Never had a problem on either TV antenna. This one in question picks up more channels and the dave ja vu where as the other antenna doesn't. Strange.

What I notice on my main Toppy a 5810 (not sure on the 5800) , it will often swap to Dave when recording dave and swap to dave If you watch a recording that is still recording on dave. Regardless of what channel you were on.

Is this HDD/signal issue common issue in PVRS or just because of MS?

My humax (BT) is ok.

You need to measure the signals; you should delete any channels that have a quality of 97 or less (strength can be much lower).

You can measure using TopManager PcControl| Signal Measurement (but you need a working toppy for that!). Please select both tuners and all muxes. Set the measure interval to at least 10 seconds. You can post the results as follows:-
1) Right click in the table
2) Select "Copy to clipboard as Padded Text"
3) add to this thread and CtrlV to paste.

It's nothing to do with MyStuff - it's a bug in the Toppy firmware.

There's a LONG thread about what causes it: disk wipes due to poor signal

Will do this.

Have just used the signal checker under utilities on my 5810 out of interest

All 100% quailty except

Mux 1 RF Ch27 at Tuner 1 96:96:97 varies to 96:96:96, the same on Tuner 2

Left longer they stablise at 96:96:97

Strength almost identical

What channels are on this Mux/RF number, ie what would I loose/have to delete?

Depends which transmitter you're on.

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about those values.

Ok. Antenna is pointed at Sandy Heath

Ch27 is the main bbc mux, which usually has a good quality signal.

Not something I want to be deleting (the channels) if TopManager PcControl| Signal Measurement gives the same.

I think that what ccs is implying is that, as this is the main bbc mux, you should have a good signal on it (unlike some others that are transmitted at lower power i.e. you should expect to have a quality of 100 on this mux so your aerial path/mechanism is not as good as it should be.

Have you checked the signal levels in your other aerial position? - this might be at 100 (indicating a difference in the cabling).

As ccs says, the disk wipe was not necessarily caused by the signal levels you posted. It could however have been caused by a temporary loss of signal e.g. power to a booster or something like water in the aerial downlead.
Reseating the cables night help.

Note: it would be better if you could post the actual results rather than just interpreting/stating what you saw (it leads to less confusion and eliminates misunderstandings).

I'm assuming that you have had the capacitors changed in the affected unit.

Geoff
