Have signed up for a 7 day free trial of Schedules Direct data (N.B. Select the JSON version in mc2xml.exe), and the good news is that:

(1) xml2mei seems to work OK with that data, and the resulting data has no very obvious problems.

(2) There appears to be additional programme information, but I have not explored this.

(3) The regional selection seemed a bit dodgy, but the end result seems OK for me (Anglia/Sudbury)

(4) Checking the first 35 channels, the LCN's all seem present & correct though the names are a bit funny (notably E4HD & ITV4HD) in places. There are 225 channels all told according to the display!

BUT

there seems to data only to 6 am Saturday 2/7/2016, i.e. for 10 days. However I suppose there is a remote possibility that this could be a limitation of the free trial.

If the data extended to the full 14 days, I would be very tempted to pay up the $25 for a year. Otherwise, I will investigate the additional info before making up my mind.

I haven't tried Schedules Direct myself, but it has been remarked in another forum [see http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=2782481&start=315 ] that "Schedules Direct (hereafter SD) seem to only update their feed once a week (on a Friday), so you'll get anything from one to two weeks worth from them, depending on when you do your data pull. I'm basing this on only having seen one update (yesterday) after polling them daily for six days."

The extra channels seem most desirable, the legacy Microsoft source is particularly lacking in that respect.
However, from my experience of checking the Pick of the week for schedule changes they are often daily (Sundays excepted) although some are simply a 5 minute change, there are others which are substituted films for example.

The current xml2mei fails if you download the full set of channels from Schedules Direct, or even 1-200 & 700-750, without any error message - it just does nothing. The full set of channels with the alternative names they give are:

I have not done a thorough check, but haven't noticed any major omissions. The Store appears as 49 rather than 39 and there are many extra programmes not accessible via the Toppy.

Will try tomorrow to see whether there is significant extra useful content.

You have duplicates for 73 and 78 in that list.
It's because 'Your TV +1' moved from 78 to 73 and the list hasn't been amended properly.

@mstombs - the extras look to me more like a $ky line-up.

With regards to the updating of the Schedules Direct info, I have downloaded data on all 229 channels three times today, and both file sizes and programme counts change each time, but the mc3xml progress reports are still saying it being collected from last midnight. It would appear therefore that corrections are being made, even though I gather more days' info is not going to be released till Friday - or is there some other explanation??

At 87 MB, doing a comparison of the full .xml files looks a bit problematical, so if no one has any better ideas I will cut the number of channels and compare the mei files. @Bizman - can you let me know the which channels are most prone to changes so I can concentrate on those.

I have found that X3 of xml2mei.php fails without any explanation if the .xml file is bigger than ~30 MB. I have a fix for this that also cuts the memory usage. If anyone is finding this to be a problem, I will release X4 with the fix, but at the moment I am looking at the Schedules Direct downloads to see what additional useful information I can extract - so far I have found episode names, data that could be used for series linking, and star ratings for films.

mc2xml reports that it is parsing data from "Freeview - Anglia (East) ( London). The "Anglia (East) is what I requested and seem to be getting, but don't understand the reference to London.

Could (London) be referring to timezone?

There is a php error message generated when a time function is used (line 215) and the timezone has not been specified (since php5). I note that the latest version makes an intelligent guess, in this case London with BST.
Channels with films most commonly changed are (most frequent first):
32 Movie Mix
61 True Entertainment
15 Film 4

Not sure its any use but I noticed today you can download the official freeview channel data used on http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/industry/Channels/channel_listings in a structured text form using http://duklogin.digitaluk.co.uk/dmoltable.php or http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/industry/About_DTT/tables/dmol_json_post/dmol_data_post

The Schedules Direct does appear to be updated to reflect changes. I have been monitoring the first 54 non-shopping channels during the day, with the following results:

(1) During the morning the download from Schedules Direct (as reported by mc2xml.ese) remained a constant length, but the mc2xml.exe output gradually shrank as it omitted programmes in the past.

(2) Between noon and 15:50, the download from Schedules Direct actually grew. ExamDiff doesn't make a very good job of comparing resultant .mei files, but a quick look indicates:

(a) Some descriptions have been changed. such as to be more specific (e.g. tonight's "000223|201606241900|201606241930|2|The One Show|||||||A topical magazine show that takes a fresh look at the Britain we're living in." turned into "000412|201606241900|201606241930|2|The One Show|||||||Alex Jones and Radio One's Greg James are live at Glastonbury 2016 for the start of the biggest greenfield festival in the world; with guests Jess Glynne, Jake Bugg and Norman "Fatboy Slim" Cook. Plus how did snooker legend Steve Davis fare as Glastonbury's newest DJ? { Presenters: Matt Baker, Alex Jones, Dan Walker}")

(b) Some "to be announced" on BBC2 for 3/7/2016 resulting from sports doubts have been turned into proper programme entries.

(c) Information has been provided as far as 9/7/2016

(d) A change of programme on LCN 63 has been made for 27/6/2016.

so there would appear to be real hope that the information is kept up to date with changes each early afternoon, but it could be that it just happens on Fridays. I will amend xml2mei.php to allow a the mei to be restricted to a specific day/time range, which should make comparisons easier.
