The Vodafone Sure Signal device is for people with poor Vodafone reception at home. It effectively creates a private cell which then routes calls and data via your router and the internet. We were given one free after threatening to leave Vodafone, and we've had it for about 2.5 years.

On Friday, ours went BANG about 3 feet from my face, and stopped working. We contacted Vodafone, who suggested taking it to our local branch, only to be told that it was out of warranty (2 years), so would cost 75 to repair. They suggested buying one on eBay.

I decided to 'have a go' at fixing it myself (of course). As soon as I opened it (Torx 10 screws), I saw 2 bulging capacitors, but then I saw an exploded chip and fuse. As I had repaired a batch of HomePlugs a while back, I had some suitable spares in stock, so I set about it. The cause of the failure was the 22uF 400V mains smoothing capacitor; it wasn't bulging, but the electrolyte had leaked out of the bottom and rotted away one leg. I then found that the input choke was open circuit, the bridge rectifier was short circuit on one side and the recovery diode was open circuit. Having replaced all these items, it still didn't work, so I replaced the opto-isolator, and it finally came back to life.

Hopefully it will last many more years now that it has decent capacitors. It's now working much better than it was prior to the bang; presumably it had been failing for a while.

So, if any of you have one of these that is over 2 years old, it might be worth considering some preventative maintenance (4 capacitors) before it becomes a much bigger job.

It seems to be a common problem http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R28HSQ0TIODAY3

I don't use Vodafone any more, but my other half stopped using the one we've got (for his work phone) when it seemed to have stopped doing anything. Probably a similar issue Surprised).
We've got a Three one that doesn't work either.

Julie

juwlz, If you'd like to drop them in when you're passing, I'll have a look at both of them.

Thanks Andy. No rush, but will be in touch some time when I'm not dashing around like a lunatic.

True story, the sure signal was originally launched as the Vodafone Access Gateway, or VAG.

Once they realised their mistake , they changed the name.
