Topmanager V5 but also on earlier version - Windows XP SP3. Didn't used to happen so probably as a result of something else I've installed and not sure what, if anything, doesn't work properly.

(Now - how to get my sig to show Nottm Tx which seems better that Waltham Tx?)

Looks like your KERNEL32.dll file has been changed.

Basically a dll is a dynamic loadable library of routines which can be accessed by programs. It is not something I provide in the installation kit - it is something that is provided by Microsoft.

Suggest to try to recover an old version of the file from the recovery points that the OS makes. Then watch to see if it gets changed by anything e.g. a windows update (if it isn't coming from Microsoft then you might have a virus on the pc)

[edit] It could be related to dropbox

Googling "getnamedpipeserverprocessid not found" may give you some cluse to the cause [/edit]

I seemed to have been under the impression that I could have done it from Topmanager.

@Geoff

I don't see that my kernel32.dll has changed for quite a while and probably not since SP3. Topmanager is so far the only program I've encountered that has complained and even then it doesn't appear to have stopped me from doing anything I need.

I am running dropbox, have installed .net (various versions) and no doubt other software and a different anti-virus. I'll keep an eye on things and if necessary I'll re-install TopManager but I don't see that I have cause to change kernel32.dll which is reporting: 5.1.2600.6532 (xpsp_sp3_qfe.140312-0419).

I don't reference GetNamedPipeServerProcessId anywhere in TopManager's code so this isn't anything I've directly used!

These are the versions on my XP system
Code:

5.1.2600.6532 (xpsp_sp3_qfe.140312-0419)   C:\WINDOWS\system32
5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)   C:\i386
5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2111)           C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
5.1.2600.6532 (xpsp_sp3_qfe.140312-0419)   C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

My version info is the same as yours!

I normally run with Admin privilege - perhaps you don't have this enabled (clutching at straws)

You should be able to update the signature by using TM Tools| Update Forum Profile

Its dropbox you need to try uninstalling

The Dropbox shell extension in the latest Dropbox update (3.10.7) uses a function that is available only starting with Windows Vista but not on XP.

You can find more details about this on the Boxifier forum here: Windows XP - Dropbox issue - Procedure entry point GetNamePipeServerProcessID could not be located in the dynamic link l?

An easy way to check if this is the case would be to go to your Dropbox folder and see if you can see the Dropbox status icons (green, blue). Also, when right clicking a file in the Dropbox folder, check and see if the regular Dropbox menus like "View on Dropbox.com" are available.

In case these don't work then your issue is related to Dropbox. Whenever you open a file dialog in Acrobat Reader that makes Windows load all the shell extensions including the Dropbox one. Since the Dropbox shell extension from 3.10.7 can not be loaded on Windows XP you'll get that error message.

You may get around the problem by storing a copy of kernel32.dll in the same folder as the TopManager.exe (I've no idea if this will work for what I would deem a critical system dll but it works for the dll's that TM uses to access the USB driver)

I'll try a bit more testing later in the week but I thought I'd just reboot and see what happens and the same error occurs but as I said it doesn't seem to affect anything and TopManager thus far has done everything I need.

Whilst the machine was 'clean' I thought I'd just see what process manager was showing:

So something invokes a number of system files, though the kernel is showing as having successfully loaded, at least at that point.

At the moment it doesn't warrant a lot of effort. I do have admin privileges and I'll have a go at putting the kernel32.dll in the TopManager folder but it's not something I like doing.

I need dropbox for other things so removing that is not an easy option.

I'm sure everything will be fine when I eventually get to Win10. Laughing

I was suggesting you put a copy of the dll in the TM directory - just in case you move the current dll there! If it has no effect, you can just delete this copy and revert to how it is at present.

The link about dropbox implies that they may issue an update i.e. if you wait long enough the problem might go away when you next upgrade Dropbox.

On reflection, don't bother copying the Kernel32.dll into the TopManager folder as there is nothing wrong with this dll.

The real problem is that the dropbox installation has replaced a different, unknown, dll (or perhaps just added something to the registry). This change causes the system to look up the GetNamedPipeServerProcessId address when a particular operation is performed. As this routine is not present in XP (it doesn't appear until Vista). it obviously can't find the routine in the dll index.

Thanks Geoff. Another good product that M$oft have spoiled and of course XP will be left behind. I'll live with the "error" and maybe other XP dinasours might find some comfort in this thread.
