@Geoff Bacon

Thanks for your information. I've had the feeling the disk may be a bit iffy at times from random crashes last year or so. I metered the PSU and it looked OK but got 2 cap kits anyway. The restarts continued but less often. I then stopped PcControl B1.4 to increase memory in case it was a contributory factor. I think its reliability improved, although I have tripped over the system occasionally when giving it too many remote disk commands.

As to the HDD spinning comment;
I have time shifting disabled. Consequently my disk often spins down/up and I have always operated it in this way.
Oddly, ram caching doesn't seem to work well on some things such as toggling subtitles (tap), where the disk may spin up to process it!
I was wondering if the tap; SecCache (UK) v0.4 was not helping this?

I don't think manufacturers make there drives as robust as a decade or so ago when warranties with 5 years were not uncommon. Precision manufacturing has its pros and cons...now the manufacturer can predict its life better and so reduce costs...at the cost of a poorer lifetime product.

I'll look at archiving off some recordings to free-up some space.

Neil.

I always thought that SecCache worked solely in memory i.e. doesn't write to disk. EPG2MEI writes to disk every so often (about 20 mins) and then tells MS that a file is available. MS also periodically scans the disk to see if a disk has appeared. Disks sold to businesses probably still have a 5 year warranty - those sold to the ordinary user won't have such a long life.

SecCache: I meant perhaps it cleared memory of my subtitle tap causing it to access the disk.
Disk: The consumer warranty was typically reduced to 1-2 years from 3-5 after the Thailand floods of 2011. Now your expected to pay for the extra warranty as an option...if available.

The Topfield solution to that is to turn time-shift on, to keep the drive awake and busy Smile

I have one of those WD drives, on a Linux system, which gets poked every 30 seconds to keep it awake. Otherwise, it did keep loading/unloading in normal system use, and was racking up load/unload cycles. Stupid feature Sad

@jimi

The disk still looks fine (note: the latest uncorrectable error may just be a repeat of the first one)

Cheers Geoff, I did wonder if the error could be a repeat. Certainly never had any problems with the drive and apart from the occasional power cycle my Toppy has been on 24/7 since it (the drive) was installed.

All looks fine, apart from the high temperatures being reported

When it wasn't so hot, you previously reported
Quote:

0xc2 Device Temperature 97 81 .. 50 0x22 ____os

Note: It may be that I have the temperature calculation wrong for this disk (there are no standard methods of calculating values). However, WD devices typically use 147 as the datum level so the reported temperatures are probably correct because, in your case, Value=86, Raw=61 resulting in Value+Raw=147. The only real way to check the calculation would be to remove the disk, connect it to a pc and use a WD diagnostic to check what temperature is reported (I'm not suggesting that you even think of doing this!)

Here you go Geoff, doesn't mean much to me! Tho I don't particularly like the look of: Acronis Health Indicator = 25 %!

  The Reallocated Sector Count, a critical attribute, shows that 60 sectors have been
  successfully remapped.
  The Power On Hours Count has 15% of the design life remaining
  While the disk temperature is now 53C, it has been as high as 62C.
  The Reallocated Event Count, a critical attribute, shows that 14 remappings have
  been attempted.
  (number of failed remappings = 14)

PERFORMANCE STATISTICS
----------------------
  Dynamic Memory Avail=  8850 KB
  Amount Used         =   203 KB
  - for Analysis      =    52 KB
  - for Display       =   151 KB
  Time Taken          =  1020 ms

@Stu's TV

The SMART stats show that
1) The disk has some hardware issues ( 60 sectors have been remapped and 14 more have failed to remap). Note: Remapping means that a damaged sector is transparently allocated to a spare sector (the toppy doesn't know about any bad sectors; as far as it is concerned, it sees them all as being good).
Issues arise when you start running out of spare sectors (the manufacturer has probably provide about 8000 spare sectors ). Also, performance starts to drop off because, when a bad sector is accessed, the disk heads will have to be moved to the location of the replacement spare sector
2) Disks have a design lifetime in terms of how long they can stayed powered up. In your case, the disk has been running for so long that only 15% of it's expected running life remains (I suspect you haven't been putting the box into standby overnight - MS can do this for you).

The disk is not knackered (yet) but you might want to look at getting a replacement drive in the near future (does a toppy have a future?). Now might also be a good time in that the disk is effectively empty i.e. you haven't any recordings to lose. Andyfras can supply a cheap interface that allows modern drives to be connected to the toppy (he can also probably suggest a suitable drive). Although you could fit a large disk (2.5+ TB), I suggest you stick around the 1 TB size (larger sizes encourage you to keep more files and that really slows down the MS startup when it checks the recordings).

Note: Suggest replace the disk if you get any funnies; one of my disks needed replacing even although the SMART attributes said it was fine.

And there is no point replacing the disk unless all of the capacitors have been changed (contact andyfras if necessary).

Cheers
Geoff

Current thinking is that there will be SD available until at least 2022.

@Bizman
Thanks for that - it means I won't have to look for another box for at least 5 years.

Geoff

Thanks Geoff, most informative. I got the HDD from ebay, second hand, so I'm not really that surprised by what you're saying. Not down to me leaving it on over-night, I'm far too a*** retentive for that to happen! Very Happy But will keep my eye out for a replacement HDD, and YES my toppy does have a future.....

Funnily enough my toppy did a few intermittent restarts recently. I'd put it down to the recent heatwave, but the disc was quite full (10 or 15 hours remaining), so possibly the 'bad sector' problem causing that.....

I did the Cap's in 2014, so, hopefully, they should be ok still....
