There was a slight issue in that I had a settings folder which contained a dat.lnk and a MyStuff folder containing msdat.lnk.

This was in with DataFiles, MP3 and ProgramFiles. Bizarre!

The report advised deleting it off. So after checking the other settings file and found the only thing missing was the dat.lnk, I moved that across and deleted the rogue settings file.
So this report is after doing that.

Well that looks ok now but I'm not quite sure from your description about what you originally had so can you post the first fsCheck report as well.

Thanks
Geoff

Sorry,

After killing off the roque settings folder, I then tried to find the report to download and copy to here and can only think I must have pressed Exit instead of Record. Embarassed

The rogue folder was in the Root Folder where DataFiles MP3 ProgramFiles reside.

I've since tried to upload the file back into that section to get a report with it in that position, but I get the message:

You can't add files or folders to the root folder.
Please move to a different folder.

So I don't know how it got in there in the first place.

The silver Toppy is still a lot noisier than it was when it was working OK, and certainly a lot noisier than the Panther.

But I have managed to turn it on and off several times without it crashing. Hopefully it will now be stable enough for us to download some of the recordings we haven't watched yet.

Never mind.
From your description, it sounds as though you had a minor corruption that caused a Settings folder to be created in the root folder. You shouldn't have needed to copy the .lnk file across as MS creates them as it needs them (suggest you just leave it there rather than delete it)

Re the noisy disk, do you think this is the disk or the toppy vibrating? Try placing a cloth under the toppy as a test (some people have used rubber stickers). Also try pressing down the top of the toppy to see if that affects the sound.

The AAM setting on the disk is set to "1/4 off". You could try setting this to "4/4 Quiet" . This is done by running the HDDInfo tap (which you should have loaded into \ProgramFiles\Utilities\) and pressing the 1 key until you get to your desired setting. Alternatively, you might prefer to let andyfras just upgrade the disk. Note: if you ask him nicely, I expect he will copy your recordings onto a new disk i.e. you would only need to copy any you want to watch while he swaps the disk (as USB copying is slow anyway, I suggest you leave the films for andy and just copy any short soaps etc that you want to watch).

Soaps??? We don't watch soaps!!! Rolling Eyes

Regarding the noise, it seems you are right again. It is currently on the sideboard which is not its usual home which is in the TV cabinet. examining it, I discovered the Toppy was terribly wobbly and one of the rear little black rubber feet was missing.

The TV cabinet has ventilation slots in its base and the rubber foot had dropped through. It is now stuck back in place. I also adjusted the AAM setting to 4/4 quiet and the Toppy is as quiet as a mouse.

Seems we were a bit hasty in going for a new bigger 1TB disk, but we had been thinking about doing it anyway to gain a bit more space.

Rather than asking Andyfras to copy stuff off the drive, we were thinking of getting a caddy to use the SAMSUNG SP2514N drive for storage.

Thanks again, Geoff, for your invaluable help.

Caroline Smile

@Geoff Bacon

I posted fsCheck results Oct 6. You commented on two pending sectors. I have re-run fsCheck (below) and things seem to have stayed the same. Are these waiting to be touched and cause a problem or what?

Phil

That all looks fine; the sectors will probably be remapped when the toppy next tries to write to them (or possibly when it tries to read them). If they are in use by a recording then this could be "forever" if you never access the file.

Drives are funny like that -- I've got a "Current Pending Sector" on a drive (non TopField) which I've tried forcing it to do something with. It won't. I've read every sector and got no errors. I've found which file the "pending" sector belongs to, and copied the file, rewritten over the sector by force, nothing shifts it. It's pending, and it's staying pending. Months later, still there. The drive clearly can't make its mind up.

If the figure increases, pay more attention Smile

If this was a PC, I'd say you could try forcing things by making (a) recording(s) to fill the drive, but I recommend not trying that on a Topfield, as they can be narky about having a full drive, to the point of data loss and corruption.

Thanks for the report but it would have been of more interest to me if you had posted the "non-cleaned" up version!

Anyway, it all looks fine now,

Thanks
Geoff

Thanks for the report but it would have been of more interest to me if you had posted the "non-cleaned" up version!

Sorry Geoff Embarassed

The missed recordings were all genuine. I suspect I'd not retuned the Toppy after a channel shuffle. I was running your TAP to check the file system was OK and the SMART info from the disk was OK, as I am seeing performance problems on start-up and on pulling up the Library screen in MyStuff. I just wanted to eliminate the basics. Thanks for your very useful TAP!!

Jonathan.

In the spirit of adding to Geoff's knowledge base of hard drives -

I recently acquired a second toppy. A face lift, TF5800PVRt which was used for about 18months and then stored. Here is the fsCheck report which you can see is fine. My 'old' toppy has about 5 times the hours on it this one has. Sorry, my signature does not reflect owning a second topyy yet but the only important info is probably which model it is installed in.

Geoff, here's my log, running fsCheck after copying the archive. I haven't reformatted the drive yet.
(BTW - your installer fails on looking for a PDF instead of a DOC file.)
Code:

The root folder should normally only contain the three reserved folder names

folder or by a corrupted file system.
To Fix: Delete or move into the correct reserved folder.

The non-zero Raw Read Error Rate can be ignored (assuming no other failure
  indications).
The Calibration Retry Count (1) should be monitored.
The Reported Uncorrectable Errs shows that 44 errors could not be corrected.
The Current Pending Sector, a critical attribute, shows that 11 sectors are waiting
  to be remapped.

@narrowguage

Thanks for the post.

The /Logs folder probably indicate that you have had disk corruption at some point; this should be in \ProgramFiles (I suspect that you have one of those as well!). Suggest you look in \Logs to determine the date of the most recent file - this will approximate to the time of the corruption.

The basic structure appears sound but the disk has some hardware issues:-

Quote:
The Reported Uncorrectable Errs shows that 44 errors could not be corrected.
The above is indicative that the drive may be experiencing electromechanical problems.
Quote:
The Current Pending Sector, a critical attribute, shows that 11 sectors are waiting to be remapped.
This above shows that you have at least 11 unstable areas on the disk.

Reformatting the disk may be sufficient in that the disk should remap the pending sectors when they are next written. However, I suggest that you periodically monitor the values to check that the disk condition is not deteriorating.

Thanks for the heads up about the .doc file; I only put the kit up this morning and obviously put in the word document rather than the pdf version.

Geoff
