I think I know the safe answer(change the disc now) but I’ll post to see if there is a more informed response.

This disc is installed in a facelift toppy I’ve had for a few years but I transferred it over from my original toppy I bought in 2009. I swapped the discs so I could transfer the recordings from the old toppy. I found it hard to use two toppies at once so I could consume the old recordings while using the new toppy for new recordings – it was very difficult to block the remote receiver on one toppy while using the other.

So the report shows 77% and 8 sectors reallocated. Back in October it was 78% and 7 sectors reallocated.

The latest report mentions the spin up time; this has not be mentioned in previous reports and the value is unchanged.

So should I change the disc as a matter of urgency? I read somewhere the threshold for a poor disc is 70%.

Will it just continue to reallocate sectors and carry on working with perhaps the odd crash and VFF or will there be a catastrophic failure?

I presume it is impractical to transfer recordings from one toppy to the other; over 100GB over USB2.0!

Phil

@philbrown

The disk doesn't look too bad so, unless you are experiencing other issue with it I suggest you just monitor it (i.e. not treat it as an urgency or as like to experience a "catastrophic failure").

While the disk has successfully remapped 8 sectors, it has many more that can be used (probably 1000+). Remapping is something that is supposed to happen automatically when the hardware experiences difficulties reading/writing to a disk sector. While the number of remaps has increased, this may be simply because it is only recently that the hardware needed to access the sector. e.g. play an ancient recording or attempt to overwrite a newly deleted recording.

It is possible to transfer the recordings over USB but a better bet would be to extract the disk, attach it to a PC and use TopfHDRW to copy the files to a PC disk. Then attach the target disk to the pc and copy the files from the pc to it (only delete files on pc when you are sure everything is ok on target disk).
Please note that if you are just moving to a new disk, then this must be formatted in a toppy (do not use TopfHDRW/Doctor). Also, while TopfHDRW is fine copying recordings, it is reported to cause problems copying shortish files (i.e. those in the \ProgramFiles tree). If you want to copy ProgramFiles then either use the TopManager SnapShot Take and Compare mechanism or copy them (both ways) using Antares over USB.

Geoff

Thanks Geoff. That helps enormously.

I think I will try to just clean out recordings over time by consuming or deleting those I'll never watch and get down to a core of those I want to keep. Then it won't be too much effort to switch. Planned rather than disaster recovery seems like the best approach.

I will be switching to the WD disc that came with the facelift which I think is still showing 100%.

Thanks for the advice.

Phil

Incidentally, you can use 2 x 5800 together by installing the Ry patch on one of them, then using a 5810 remote with it.

See: https://www.toppy.org.uk/~r2-d2/patches.html#userinterface

Chuckle, my disk is down to 30%,not looking good. It has already had its PSU updated and a disk replaced. This may be its time unfortunately.

It has done a very good job I have to say. This forum and its members have been invaluable, thanks.

You need to enable SMART on the disk. I think that you need to run HDDInfo to do that. Then run FsCheck again.

@wjohnm

As Andy says, and as mentioned in the report, you need to run the HDDInfo tap and use option 3; this will enable SMART reporting and will show the physical state of the disk

Thanks Geoof and Andy.
Took a while as HDDInfo on Downloads is a bad link, but then found it on TopManager Smile
Hope this is correct.

The report shows that there are no issues with the disk hardware so there should be no need to replace it because of hardware concerns.

If the disk is particularly noisy and you don't think that what the toppy is standing on is acting as a sound board then you could try using HDDinfo to change the AAM setting. Currently, this is 0 (off) allowing the disk heads to move at maximum speed. Try setting to 1 or 2 (or even 4 for a short test). Note: I've never found the need to use this.

There are 2 bad recordings mentioned at the start of the report. I suggest you try playing these and delete if they won't play.

I suppose the disk noise may be due to the capacitors

Geoff
PS: There is no need to quote the previous post - it makes the topic very long and difficult to find anything

Thanks Geoff
I have deleted the 2 files. Also 2 duplicate channels.
Regarding the noise it is in same position on top of a rarely used Video/CD player but don’t want to swap them over as that will reduce the cooling on toppy.
I’ll try your suggestion.
John

Try removing the "rarely used Video/CD player" to see if the noise changes

Changing AAM to 1, 2,3 4 made no difference, interesting it says 4 is loud.
Putting it directly on the base w/o video also the same, or maybe worse.
The whole case seems to vibrate and a heavy weight on it damps it slightly, but not great.
I assume it is the bearings in the disc, or something else mechanical so disc replacement is my thinking.
Just need to decide what.

@YorkshireJumbo

The disk is physically sound.
There has been a file system corruption at some point (but this also applies to most toppies that have been seriously used)

I'm guessing that "/Red Dwarf" in the root folder is a folder of recordings.
Likewise "/Spike Milligan Assorted Q"
I suggest you use Antares to look in these folders. If you want the contents then rename the containing folder into /DataFiles (otherwise delete the contents and folder)

"/Women Sex and Society A Timewatch_180620.rec" - Again use Antares to rename into /DataFiles. Then try playing the file and delete if it won't play (it shouldn't play)

Geoff
