The fsCheck tap validates the file system of a toppy disk. This eliminates the need to attach the disk to a pc so that it can be analyzed using TopfHDRW (although TopfHDRW may still need to be used if the file system needs to be repaired).

As this tap is primarily for use when the disk structure is suspect, it needs to be loaded onto the toppy in anticipation of a future problem (this avoids modifying the file system when it may be corrupted).

The tap can normally be run whether or not other taps are running or Time Shifting/Recording is in progress (but you may have to run without other taps if memory is ?low?).

When run, fsCheck scans the disk and produces a report that contains the following sections:-
o VERDICT (?appears GOOD? or ?appears CORRUPTED?)
o File summary (the number of files, folders and capacity of the disk)
o A summary of issues (numbers of each type of issue and type of fix)
o The issues (later ones may be suppressed if a ?large? number exist)
o Disk Geometry (sectors, clusters, FAT size)
o Disk Usage (similar to the File summary)
o SMART data (output similar to that produced by the HDDInfo tap)
o SMART Interpretation (an interpretation of the SMART data ? see below)
o Performance Statistics (memory usage/analysis time)

The ?report? is built up in memory and is displayed on the TV screen and also output to the RS232
serial interface (for those who can process this data).

For a ?normal? toppy, this report will look very boring as there should be no issues (assuming one treats any flagged Time Shifting or ?Recording in progress? as comments).

The full report can be stored to disk by pressing the Record or Archive buttons on the remote control (you should really only do this if the disk doesn?t appear corrupt!).

For further details, please see http://www.geeceebee.co.uk/fschecktap.

Please post your fsCheck report in the fsCheck Reports thread (please enclose in a
... [ /code] block).
Even if it is "boring", this will aid me to improve the tap.

Geoff

fsCheck released.

Note: if fsCheck does not immediately show as being available on the TM "Tools| Install Files" list, do a "Help| Check For Updates".

I've tried downloading fsCheck using both IE and Firefox but it keeps failing.

Is there an issue with the hosted file?

The original download link doesn't specify http or https - this should allow it to work with either protocol (I was getting a message about displaying insecure content and a google search implied that this would fix it).

I've now changed the page so that it specifies http; please let me know whether or not it now works.

I've now uploaded version 1.1 of fsCheck. The changes are minimal but I advise anyone who has downloaded 1.0 to update to 1.1

The changes are:

SMART
* Add possible comment about temperature (omitted in V1.0).
* Output message if SMART is disabled (including how to enable).

Other
* Add ".ads" and ".cut" to files that should be in DataFiles folder.
* Enclose disk report in a
...
block to ease posting on forum.
* Treat a recording that has a NULL packet at the start as a valid recording.

BadRecordings
* Correct minimum size to use 0.34*1024*1024 (was 3*1024*1024/4).
* Ignore duration check if the file name contains CUT (case sensitive).
* Ignore file names containing "-ADS.rec" (used by CutAds).

Changed Text In Report
* Invalid filename - Spell out the filename so can identify the problem characters.
* Invalid filename - Say if no characters in name.
* Invalid date/time - Reword and also say that is is unlikely to cause problems.
* Time Shifting - Add "can ignore this".
* Bad Recording - Where possible, indicate why it did not qualify as a good recording.
* Failed Recording - Remove Note saying that may be due to changes in Jul 2013.
* Too Few Clusters - Only explain VF&F on first occurrence.
* Too Many Clusters - Only explain VF&F on first occurrence.
* Chain Not Terminated - Add "do not delete while recording in progress".
* Cross Linked - Add an extra "reboot tapless" to the fix.
* Cross Linked - Add "do not delete while recording in progress".

Geoff

I've never managed to do that, although I've tried (accidentally) more than once. How do you end up deleting a file when recording is in progress?

The native archive says "Cannot delete the recording file", so is this a badly behaved TAP out there?

Actually that's a bit unfair, most Unixy people would expect to be able to unlink() a file and have the OS worry about things like "it's currently in use, but I'll drop it when I can".

I meant do not delete the file from a pc while a recording is in progress (and this only applies to files that have been marked as "Cross Linked" or "Chain Not Terminated"; you can delete other files)
