Hi, is there anything clever I need to do to get Ux and Uy to work with uploads? If I patch my RAM firmware with either, I get the speedup with downloads along with a somewhat choppy UI. But I don't get any speedup in the upload direction. And the UI seems as fast as ever. I have tried Altair, Antares and MacTF.

I believe I have all the relevant speed up patches in place including U and Uu, and this test was run with no TAPs running.

I read the thread and it appears that it should speed up non-turbo uploads as well as downloads

http://forum.toppy.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11985

Thanks, Mark

Edit: apologies this should be in Firmwares..., I don't know how it ended up here. Mods could you move. Thanks

As a point of reference, I use U,Uu and Uy and I get an upload speed of 1.28MB/s (non-turbo) and a download speed of 1.48MB/s (non-turbo).

With U and Uu, no turbo, no other TAPs running...

Baseline:- 1.15 MB/s up, 1.42 MB/s down
With Uy:- 1.28 MB/s up, 2.08 MB/s down
With Ux:- 1.28 MB/s up, 2.24 MB/s down

As above with turbo on...

Baseline:- 2.35 MB/s up, 3.34 MB/s down
No change with Uy

But R2-D2 said in the linked thread...

"On my latest collection of patches, uploading went from 1.1Mb/s to 2.3Mb/s" and "An alternative is [Uy] ... Both rates down to 2.0Mb/s on my tests with Altair."

Hence my confusion, I expected a bigger jump in upload speed. I guess 10% more in the upload direction is worthwhile however.

Thanks for your post

Mark

Ux is seriously impressive in the download. I can record 2 channels, play back a recording and noodle with MyStuff while downloading. No problems. If I do a QuickJump the Toppy has to have a Big Think before it happens, but it's perfectly useable. Haven't tried chase play yet.

Now I'm backing up settings and REC files daily, I guess that any speed increase on the USB side would be useful. I've tried searching for a guide on which patches and DLLs I need to load, but can only find different threads with slightly different suggestions as to which patches should be applied, and which combinations cause crashes.

Maybe I'm just being dumb, but could someone point me towards a definitive thread/solution

I dont know of a definitive thread, but if you look at my sig, the only non-standard USB patches I have are U and Uu. They substantially speed down and upload in turbo and non-turbo mode (IIRC 60-100% speed up, I can give you details if you like).

I have been using U and Uu for a couple of years and they are rock solid, I have never had a problem. I have patched my firmware with them so they are "always on". I do quite a lot of uploading but little downloading.

If you use U and Uu with Windows I believe you need the newer usb .dll to get the speed up. Instructions are on the Antares website, probably elsewhere. IIRC you use Antares so you probably have the newer .dll already. If you use MPEG Streamclip it "just works".

I have just been noodling with Ux and Uy and they seem to give substantially more speed to non-turbo downloads, but they can make the UI a bit choppy. Could be useful for you if you are background downloading while using the Toppy, ie you want to avoid turbo mode??? Ux and Uy don't seem to affect turbo mode, nor do they seem to significantly affect uploads.

Doh! The Uy patch isn't working for me, but it used to, I'm sure. What's changed? Ah, Windows 8. Schlimmbesserung.

With U, Uu and Uy

Windows 8
non-turbo: upload 1.25MB/s and download 1.52MB/s
turbo: upload 2.35MB/s and download 3.28 MB/s

Windows XP
non-turbo: upload 1.27MB/s and download 1.80MB/s
turbo: upload 2.35MB/s and download 3.28 MB/s

RaspberryPi
non-turbo: upload 0.69MB/s and download 1.70MB/s
turbo: upload 1.24MB/s and download 3.08 MB/s

Word du jour, I like it

Thanks for results, about the same as mine, sounds like little or no upload increase is the norm.

@ R2-D2, I just wonder if perhaps the version with the upload speed up never made it onto the server? ie what is labelled V3 might actually be V2? Is it possible you have a fast-upload version lurking on your PC somewhere?

cheers & thanks

@Markpax: Don't hold your breath for a reply. R2-D2 hasn't been seen around these parts for quite some time. I believe he is no longer using a Toppy.

OK, thanks for that. I tend to backup in the mornings, when no one's using it, but there may be the odd recording, so I might try Ux as well. My scripts all run using Antares with Turbo off. I'm fairly sure I replaced the DLL using TopManager when I was exploring its functionality, but I'll check.

The last time I patched anything, I did it on the PC, but I assume I can now use FWLoad to add the patches. I've read the instruction page, but i'm afraid I'm not clear what I have to do to add these to the firmware installed by the MS install script and aXel-ise it. Do I just need to put these patch files into the /Add directory?

I'm sure an expert will be along soon, but....

I always use the HDFW TAP. Run HDFW the first time, it will create a folder called (IIRC) HDFW_Firmware on the Toppy

Put the patch into that folder

Run HDFW again

Then read the HDFW instructions, you tell HDFW to what to patch, then tell it to overwrite the existing firmware, then there is a Big Scary Wait and your Toppy comes back re-flashed

You can patch it with HDFW but, as we are hopefully going to get a Mystuff 6.5 at some point, I would stick with FwLoad.
1) Put the required patches in the Add folder as you suggest
2) Run the FwLoad tap (this should be in \Programfiles\Utilities) either using the remote and the native mechanism or by using the TM "PcControl| TapCommander| Run Tap" option or by using the TapCommander tap.

The end result will be the same but putting the patch into the FwLoad mechanism will mean that it is automatically applied if you ever (re-)install the firmware using the MS installer.

Geoff
