Help needed, please.

I'm new to this forum and have purchased a Toppy 5810PVRt. I've only just got around to installing TAPs but have encountered a problem. I installed Topfield Tools and Mystuff 6.4 as instructed via USB (XP computer). After I installed Tools (before MyStuff), i connected to the Toppy and downloaded a .rec file to make sure everything was working OK. I then ran the MyStuff installer and followed the instructions (the written ones as well). Everything seemed to go OK and the firmware update seemed to work, too. I rebooted and waited, and waited. It ran through the sequence C457 (?), LOADING and RUN, and is stuck at RUN. It is stuck on one channel (BBC2) with the channel info permanently on view in the lower screen. No remote keys work, I cannot change channels or access anything else. If I try to turn it off if just sticks at WAIT. I have to unplug it to reboot, and then it just starts up and gets stuck at RUN again and nothing will work.

How do I solve this or get it back to where it was (working, but clunky in its native state) without deleting recordings I've made?

Many thanks for help and advice.

Hi Ian

Welcome to the forum, and to the world of the toppy.

Try booting your toppy with the 0 key pressed down on the remote. This will prevent Taps from loading, and may get round the problem. If so, we can then try to work out what is going wrong.

On a 5810, it's very important to delete all unused channels (pay, porn, shopping etc.), especially when running TAPs. Otherwise it has a tendency to run out of RAM and then crash.

To delete channels manually, press OK scroll down the list to the channel you want to delete, press Red, select delete, confirm. Repeat for other unwanted channels.

Addendum:

On the third time of trying, holding down the "0" key whilst re-inserting the plug booted it back in its original format.

So can anyone please help with what is wrong and how I can get MyStuff going?

Many thanks

PS to andyfras - thanks for the rapid reply, I'll try getting rid of various superfluous channels and see what happens.

The MyStuff installer should have installed several programs (taps) on your toppy but you have prevented them running by holding down the 0 as the toppy boots. What we really need is the output of the MyInfo tap.

Normally, MyInfo runs automatically when the toppy boots but, because of the 0, you need to run it manually:-
1) Press Archive on the remote (shows DataFiles)
2) Press << (shows ProgramFiles)
3) Press OK on "Auto Start" (should already be selected)
4) Scroll down to MyInfo and press OK
5) Press Exit after MyInfo has completed updating the screen

You now need to transfer \ProgramFiles\Logs\MyInfo Log.txt back to the pc and post the output in this post. You could use Altair for this but I suggest you use TopManager (link in my signature below):-
1) "Connection| Settings" - create a USB (probably) connection
2) "Connection Open
3) "Display| MyInfo Log"
4) Click in pane, type CTRL A (select all) and CTRL C (copy)
5) Post a reply to this thread and CTRL V to paste the contents.
6) Wait further instructions

Geoff

[edit] Suggest you post the log before trying to fix it by deleting channels[/edit]

Actually, MyInfo may have already created a log file on a normal startup. If it has, that one will be more useful than a manual run, as it will give us information about the TAPs you installed.

If you do have the log file (you'll only be able to see it using Altair / Antares / ftp from the PC - it'll be invisible on the Toppy's own UI), copy that to your PC and post it here. If not, run MyInfo manually and copy the log file you get then (but it'll be of limited use).

@juwlz

Not strictly true as a manual MyInfo log should still show the taps that are present in Auto Start (even though they are not running)

Good point ... assuming it just looks in Auto Start for them. It does describe them as "No longer running" though, which is perhaps a tad misleading Wink.

However, a log with TAPs attempting to run will give us a better idea of free memory (or the lack of it), which a standalone run won't.

Thanks one and all for detailed and helpful comments. I had already gone through and deleted excess channels (is there a way to do this easily, I wonder - it's incredibly laborious one click at a time) as I am in an area of signal overlap so have multiple instances of the same channels. I dread the next time when I have to re-tune.........

Having deleted channels, the Toppy booted more happily and the new EPG seems to be working, so far. I will check it out over the next day or so and report back if everything is OK or otherwise. I will also post a log taken with Altair as suggested.

Many thanks again.

The ChannelOrganiser TAP will auto delete channels based on criteria you supply during its use. See the channelorganiser pdf in the download for further details.

Hi Ian

I recommend that you give TopManager a try (I'm biased because I wrote it). This should greatly simplify things for you as it provides easy access to commonly required operations on the toppy (if you can run Altair then you can run TopManager). One of the things it provides is a "Check MyStuff" option.

Please note that although you have deleted duplicates, you may not have deleted the correct ones! That is why we need your MyInfo Log file. As Hyde says, the preferred method of deleting channels is with ChannelOrganiser. This is because it can remember the channels you have previously deleted (making repeating the exercise much easier) and it can also update the support files used by other taps e.g. MyStuff, EPG2MEI and Extend.

So please provide your Myinfo Log so that others can offer advice.
Also, please specify your postcode and the transmitter you expect to receive signals from; this will allow us to check that you have deleted the "correct" duplicates.

Geoff

The MyStuff installer should have installed a number of TAPs in the ProgramFiles/Utilities folder. Two of these will really be your friend: firstly, FastScanGUI will allow you to only scan from one transmitter. That will prevent a lot of duplicates in the first place. Secondly, Channel Organiser will allow you to mass delete all the dross channels AND remember your choices for next time you need to do it.

Put FastScanGUI in Auto Start, and rename it to include your transfer, as per the readme file. Do NOT put CO in Auto Start.

Hello All

Just a quick update to my last post - I haven't had much time to do anything, and I am away from today for a week so won't be doing much until I get back.

I deleted excess TV channels (I'm in PE14 9AR and my transmitter should be Sandy Heath, although I get a very strong signal from Waltham as well) and My Stuff seems to be happy, although I haven't run CO yet. The log of channels is as follows:

Hi Ian

You must remove all duplicate channels and you must ensure that only channels from Sandy Heath are left (or Waltham if you decided to use that as your transmitter).

The easiest way is to use the FastScanGUI tap; the MyStuff installation has probably installed it on your system already. If not, use the "Tools| Install Taps" option in TopManager (link in my signature).
To run FastScanGUI:-
1) Press > (between << and >>) on the remote
2) Press Archive
3) press << (should display ProgramFiles)
4) Scroll down to Utilities and press OK
5) Scroll down to FastScanGUI and press OK
6) Scroll down to Sandy Heath (choose 23 Nov 11; not "2012")
7) Press the Record button (this will scan 27, 24, 31, 52 and 48 )

Having done the above, you may still have one or two duplicates (blame the broadcasters) and you will have lots of other channels that you don't want. To fix, perform steps 1 to 4 above but this time run the ChannelOrganiser tap.
1) Set Option 1 to No (no scan)
2) Set Option 2 to 2: "Previously Saved List" (you won't have one at this point but it will be set for future runs)
3) Set Option 3 to "2: Review using signal info"
4) Set option 4 to 0: No (update timers)
5) Set option 5 to 0: MyStuff
6) Set 6 and 7 to No
7) set 8 and 9 (Extend and EPG2MEI) to Yes
8 ) Set 10 to no
Press "OK" ( you might have to position over it)

In the review section; delete any duplicates (eg 795) and remove all porn, pay and shopping. Try to get it down to 40 TV stations

Having pruned the channels, reboot the toppy, wait two minutes and repost your Myinfo Log. If you are using TopManager then please say so as it helps me give advice (you said in your post that it MyInfo overflowed; did you mean that it went past the bottom of the screen? If so, right click in the TopManager display and choose Select All. then right click and select copy).

Geoff

Found 65 TV channels and 115 Radio channels
You can get down from 180 to 40 channels without losing anything much that you'll actually want to watch, listen to or record. By the time you've eliminated the duplicates, porn, pay, shopping and other unwanted channels (including any radio you don't listen to), you're usually left with around 40 or so.

On a 5810 running MyStuff, getting down to 40 or so channels is absolutely essential, or you'll run out of memory. MyStuff also doesn't cope well with duplicate channels, which is another reason to prune.

As Geoff says, the place to start is with FastScanGUI (the transmitter you choose will probably depend on which way your aerial is pointing) - you could experiment with each, and stick with the one that works best. Put FastScanGUI in Auto Start and do a Factory Reset to get started. Once you've worked out which transmitter works best, rename FSG to include the transmitter name (as per the ReadMe).

If you switch between transmitters, you need to Factory Reset, reboot and Factory Reset again (IIRC) to get you Toppy to forget which transmitter you chose. When FastScanGUI is in Auto Start it runs on startup, checks whether you have any channels, and if not, brings up the UI so that you can choose a transmitter and do a scan. If you already have channels, it just exits.
