My original setup
http://www.admac.myzen.co.uk/toppy_fan/

HOWEVER.....

The small fan in that set-up became noisy after a year or so and was removed. In retrospect the small fan was an overkill and is not necessary on a 5800.

On my second Toppy (also a 5800) I have fitted a 60mm fan. In my experience it only has to run slowly (1000/1200 rpm @ 12V) to provide adequate cooling. Run the fan too fast an you will get a lot of noise from the air flow. The fan came cheaply from Ebay.

You can also reduce the speed of a 2000rpm @ 12V fan by running it from 7V or fitting a series resistor.

Others have drilled holes in the case, mounted them under the disk etc. and I doubt if the cooling effect was any better than cable tying the fan to the underside of the top cover (blowing outwards). You don't need much air movement to cool the box by 10 to 15C.

Molex from Ebay. Example first hit on Ebay using the search string "molex fan"
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-PIN-4-PIN-MOLEX-PC-COMPUTER-FAN-ADAPTER-SHIELDED-/280773103031?pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item415f618db7
You will find other variations for the fan connector at the same price.

A more expensive source of fans from QuietPC
http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products/casefans

Original thread
http://forum.toppy.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5552
There are a variety of ideas in that thread.

Have you considered updating your firmware and mystuff(to Version 6.4) which will be a more reliable combination than the version you have in your signature?

The De can be patched rather than using a TAP

The Windows MyStuff Installer will automatically replace Description Extender with the De patch, Remote Extender with the Re patch, and eit2mei with EPG2MEI.
It will also update MyInfo to a version which copes with the apparent duplicate "bracketing" LCNs now used for the Adult channels.

Apology to everybody my info at the bottom is not correct it?s been a along time since I put the info in.
I will have to do a refresher course on this task again.
At the moment I have taken all the taps out due to my ongoing problems at one point I could not get the Laptop to talk to toppy must have had disagreement.
As I have just done the Cap mod I will now do the fan mod if this sorts my problems out I will then start on the Taps again I was blaming the Taps on my problems I was going to give up on the Toppy but I?m going to give this a last attempt at fixing.
Does Toppy not do an Auto update of Software if not point me in the right direction.
Thanks Buzzy the Amateur

Topfield gave up on its UK customers after inflicting on us the biggest load of ~#*! in the way of firmware Sad There have been no over the air (OTA) updates for a couple of years and it unlikely that there will be ever again.

The recommended firmware on this site with many tens of bug fixes that Topfield never got round to supplying is superior to what they produced. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES use the firmware you find on the Korean or Turbosat site.

With respect to your fan modification - it will not cure anything that is currently broken. It will just reduce the internal temperature by 10 to 15C improving the long term reliability of the PSU capacitors and hard disk.

What exactly is still wrong with your box? And which firmware are you using?

Hi I believe my version is 5.14,09 taken from toppy menu \ info.
My problems are when toppy has been left on for a few hours or just after doing a recording it becomes unresponsive I have to switch unit off on power to get working again. Sometimes I can not get into my recordings folder (Archive)

Are these problems before or after your capacitor replacement, or both?

If after, you cannot rule out a continuing hardware problem but it could also be something like running out of RAM (Random access Memory) on the Toppy due to problem with scanning for channels etc. (duplicates from more than one transmitter, too many channels collecting the EPG data)

We need more clues and the best way of doing this to install and run the MYInfo TAP on the Toppy which produces a text log file on the Toppy's hard disk which can then be downloaded back to your PC and posted here.

The Toppy.org installer that can be run PC makes installing the recommended firmware and/or Mystuff easier than you may have experienced before. The installer also installs MyInfo that is run automatically on coming out of standby and a few other diagnostic TAPs that can be run manually to help with fault finding. For instance, it will put the HDDInfo TAP (screenshot http://www.admac.myzen.co.uk/HDDInfo3/ ) on the Toppy - this can give information on disk errors as well as monitoring the temperature of the hard disk in real time. You will also get the Signal monitor TAP will give you information on the transmitter channels that you are receiving.

If you have a windows pc, you can use TopManager (link in my signature) to install MyInfo
1) Install TopManager
2) Connection| Setting - create a USB (probably) connection
3) Connection| Open
4) Tools| Install Taps| MyInfo
5) Reboot toppy and wait 2 minutes after it boots
6) Display| MyInfo Log; cut and paste the output into this thread
7) Tools| Update Forum Profile - generate a forum signature

Of course, if you use the MyStuff installer, as well as updating the firmware and installing MyStuff, it will also add several taps of which MyInfo is one. Still, it might be a good idea to post the log as above before you go down that path (at least we then the configuration that you had before installing MyStuff as it might give some insight into why you have been experiencing problems)

You must get rid of the duplicate channel but, normally, it is important to get rid of the correct one. In your case, I suspect the easiest method is to get rid of both!
You can do this from the native menus:- press OK, scroll down to required channel, Press Red and select "Delete". Repeat for other duplicate. Note: you won't be able to delete channels if the box is recording.

Although you could delete the channels as described, the recommended method is to use the ChannelOrganiser tap. This is because the general recommendation on this site, is to reduce the number of channels to around 40 (by removing Pay, porn and shopping channels). That is a lot of key pressing, especially if you have to repeat it all after a rescan. CO simplifies this and, in the event of a rescan, can use a list of channels that you previously deleted. Should you ever get around to using MyStuff, it also updates various config files used by different taps.

Did you try TopManager (you haven't said)? If so, you can load ChannelOrganiser using "Tools| Install Taps| Channel Organiser". If not, is there a reason why ? (like you use a Mac in which case you will have to load the tap manually).

Geoff
[edit]To display the HDD data, you can use the "Display| HDDInfo" in TopManager. If that is greyed out, use "Connection| Browse", double click Settings and Double Click the "HDDInfo" folder. Then double click the file it contains [/edit]

It should have written a text log file to the Toppy's hard disk called HDDInfo.log. If not, try pressing the record button once while the HDDInfo is on screen.

The temperature is in degrees centigrade. Only data in the "raw" column is important for temperature and it will update in real time.

If you post the log files in here it helps if you type {code} at the start of the text and {/code} at the end REPLACING THE CURLY BRACKETS WITH SQUARE BRACKETS. Instructions http://forum.toppy.org.uk/forum/faq.php?mode=bbcode#5

Example of what the code tags do..
Code:

Attr                                        Description Value Worst  Thr       Raw   Flags
0x01                                Raw Read Error Rate  200  200   51         0  0x002f     wpr_os
0x03                                       Spin Up Time  158  156   21      7075

If you have run the Signal Monitor TAP pressing the record while it is on screen also produces a text log file.
http://www.tapworld.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=318

How do you set timers on your Toppy? Only in Mystuff or a combination of Mystuff and the native firmware?

You should only be setting timer in one or the other - NOT both.

With a 5800 it is recommended that you run the older recommended firmware (5.13.65T) and use Mystuff to replace the series linking functionality in the later (but buggy) firmwares.

Furthermore, I believe that the firmware that you are running is a freeview+ firmware and it never truly goes into standby. It only pretends to go into standby! It is recommended that for reliable operation a toppy is placed in standby at least once a day.

This is an old version of Mystuff and the latest version has some improvements to make the Mystuff/Toppy combination more reliable.

The toppy is very intolerant of duplicate channels

It is recommended that you delete all the dross/pay/porn channels and any radio you don't listen to to get a total (TV and radio) of around 40 or 50. This is more important on a 5810 but it also helps a lot with a 5800.

TopManager works solely in the \ProgramFiles tree and provides menu operations for many things you might want to do on the toppy (including some you didn't know you wanted!). You can use drag and drop to transfer files to/from the toppy (using the Connection| Browse option) or you can use "File| Import Files" (again when in "Connection| Browse")

Altair can only transfer files to/from the toppy but can access any file i.e. to transfer recordings, you would need Altair. To transfer files to \ProgramFiles, you can use TopManager or Altair.

For completeness, other alternatives to TopManager and Altair are Antares and TopSet.

As I said in my previous posts, the link to TopManager is in my signature (just click the underlined "TopManager")

Geoff
