My 15 month old 5810 has already had a new hard drive (in January) & further crash losing library & needing re-format 3 weeks ago (May). Both sorted by TurboSat under warranty. I've been running MyStuff as I love the functionality, & have always used the latest version at the time. Today, it crashed trashing the library yet again. After a couple of re-boots, it seems to be working now, but again we've lost our library.. Should I give upon on the Toopy? Anybody got any ideas why this is happening? Confused

Trashing of disks can be caused by a poor quality signal (amongst other things). This can be compounded by early versions of MyStuff calling a Toppy library function more than necessary when the signal is bad.

MyStuff 6.4 reduces the number of times that this function is called and this appears to have minimised occurrences.

Suggest you perform a full install of MyStuff 6.4 together with associated taps (including the new utility TAPs).
Having reinstalled the software, run the SignalMonitor tap (part of the utilities) and post the results here (Note:, quality needs to be 98+ on both tuners, strength can be much lower, 55+ say).

Also please post your MyInfo Log so that we can see your configuration.

If you have a windows pc, try TopManager (link in my signature). This can do lots of things but, in particular, you can use it to retrieve the MyInfo Log, the Signal Monitor results, save a snapshot of \ProgramFiles (in case it happens again) and set up a forum signature.

I'm running MyStuff 6.4 already & reception is around 70-98% dependent upon mux - The channel recording today was in the lower of the reception bands, but unless i'm being really naive, I can't see why reception problems should wipe the library archive.. Confused

I installed Mystuff 6.4 onto a newly formatted hard drive when it came back from TurboSat 3 weeks ago.. should I uninstall/reinstall it?
I'll install SignalMonitor tomorrow & post the logs.. Thanks for the ideas

You shouldn't need to reinstall MyStuff itself but they have only just added the utility taps to the installation kit.
You can therefore either install the SignalMonitor tap manually or, if you want, just rerun the MyStuff installer (there is no need to deinstall MyStuff first)

As I said before, you might want to run the TopManager "Take Snapshot" option to give you something you can fall back to.

The signal level/strength figures are not too important as long as they are around 60%+ (or even 50%+)

What is more important is the QUALITY figures which should be 98%+ and don't vary over a short time (the short time being the sample time of the Signal Monitor TAP)

The disk wipe with poor reception, or recording from a poor quality MUX, is thought to be a bug in the Toppy firmware.

I had a disk wipe early this year and it coincided with the weather conditions causing two MUXs to disappear during a couple of evenings. I had automatic searches set to record from one of those MUXs during this time.

Thanks chaps... have done this.. But signal quality 100% all mux's!. Any other ideas?
Have done as you suggested & installed Topmanager & will use to take snapshot (I had already copied a few files to my PC, so all was not completely lost)

We might spot something if you post the MyInfo Log and the SignalMonitor results

Does your Toppy get put into standby when not in use / overnight?
Is it enclosed in a cabinet, or is there plenty of free air circulation around it?

5810s and their components do not fare well in hot conditions, and the Toppy has no fan, and fewer/smaller vents than a 5800 to allow the heat to dissipate through.

Having said that, heat is not usually the cause of a complete disk wipe.

Large numbers of channels (anything more than about 40 in total on a 5810 running MyStuff) reduce the amount of memory available to unsustainable levels and can lead to memory corruptions, which could result in almost anything getting trashed, but again, not usually the entire disk. A MyInfo log will show how many channels you have.

Meanwhile, EMJB's thread on disk wipes may (or may not) reveal something useful from his investigations so far.

You should've never got the 5810 in the first place. That said, if you now want to give up then consider a 5800 instead. You might want to ask Turbosat to get you a 5800 as a replacement. It'd be equally in their interest to do that. Remember, if the problems persist with your 5810 (under warranty) then you do have the right to a REFUND and not just dubious "repairs" ad nauseum.

Thanks for all the feedback...I've got my signal monitor & log files.. they are small txt files.. is there anywhere I can upload them to, as I can't attach them to the thread?
My Toppy is always left in standby overnight, & all of my AV kit is kept on open shelves, ventilated, as I am conscious of overheating.

The Channel list is worth pursuing as I'm sure I could get rid of most & leave no more than 40-50
The reason I have the 5810 is that I specifically want 1080p upscaling via HDMI & a large hard disk. My rationale for the Toppy is that I can archive the .rec files, which doesn't seem to be available on other PVRs

Most people cut and paste them into a post using the code tags at the start and end to maintain the format http://forum.toppy.org.uk/forum/faq.php?mode=bbcode#5

Found 80 TV channels and 24 Radio channels

These need to be trimmed down to a sensible 40 or 50 in total.

Interactive On
Timeshift On

For reliability it helps to have Interactive services disabled (via the menu). If you do use these services they can be turned on and off with a TAP when required. i.e pressing "red" will automatically trigger the TAP to turn them on and quitting the service will turn Interactive off again. The TAP is called MHEG On/Off A3 http://forum.toppy.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=221445#221445

Memory - Free: 6 MB, Available: 5 MB

This is the amount of RAM (Random Access Memory) left on your machine and if it gets too low (probably around 2 to 3M) you will start getting crashes. The amount of EPG and the number of timers you have will probably be eating up RAM. It only starts with around 20Mbytes. Deleting unwanted channels may help a lot with this figure.
Manually run MyInfo and you can see how much of this memory is left after, say, 2 hours after coming out of standby. Currently MyInfo is reporting the figure 1 minute after power-up.

The quality figures above are OK but it may be worth running the Signal Monitor TAP at different times during the day to see if they change. Signal levels of 100% suggest that you are in a good reception area but it is possible to have too much signal that can overload the front end of the tuners. However, an overload would be reflected in the quality figures falling.

Overall not too much wrong with your set-up apart from having so many dross, shopping, pay and porn channels which can be deleted. More than a total of 50 (TV and Radio) on a 5810 is known to result in some unreliability.

edit (totally unrelated to crashes)
Re patch missing - doesn't Mystuff need it?
